Mookie Betts is one of the finest players in the sports arena today. He is a well-grounded athlete whose destiny in baseball was partly decided by his parents’ choice of his name, Markus Lynn Betts (MLB), also an initial for Major League Baseball.

He is an American professional baseball right fielder for the Boston Red Sox of the MLB. He was born in 1992 on October 7 in Nashville Tennesse. Mookie Betts had a multi-sports upbringing but somehow, baseball stuck. His family is one that is quite competitive; they played basketball as well as held bowling competitions. As a kid, Mookie always had a kind of a ball in his hand – be it a soccer ball, football or ping-pong.

Mookie was a standout basketball player in high school and was named the MVP in his senior as well as junior years. He was born into a family where sport and its attendant benefits are natural to them. His mother is an avid bowler and taught him how to bowl at an early age. She was also his first Little League coach. He seemingly inherited his baseball acumen from her and credits her for teaching him the right form as well as how to compete in any game. His folks are Diana Benedict and Willie Betts and they are African-Americans.

His father participated in track and basketball during his youth. Willie Betts is a retired CSX railroad mechanical superintendent and also served in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Air Force. Mookie has an uncle who was a standout on the baseball field, a 14-year MLB veteran, Terry Shumpert. Terry worked extensively with his nephew and was always on point to guide him.

His real name, Markus Lynn Betts was chosen by his parents to form the initials MLB and his nickname, Mookie also has a reference to sports. Shortly after he was born, his parents watched former NBA guard Mookie Blaylock play and liked his knack, thus, the ascription of the name to their son by his basketball fan mother who thought the name would be just perfect for her son. The Red Sox player, as such, prefers to be addressed by his nickname rather than by his real moniker.

Mookie is engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Brianna Hammonds. The two have known each other since middle school and have been together since then. Brianna, born on August 7, 1994, graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2015.

The Red Sox right fielder became the first player in MLB history to produce four three-homer games before the age of 26 after he hit three home runs in a 5–4 win over the Kansas City Royals on May 2, 2018.

He made his first All-Star game in 2016, the same year he hit 31 home runs to go along with 113 RBIs, 122 runs, and a .318 batting average.

Mookie Betts was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 29, with a left abdominal strain on June 1, 2018.

Although he committed to the University of Tennesse on a baseball scholarship, he never played a game for them as he was drafted into the MLB before he could ever play college baseball.
