Family – Parents and Brothers

It was the ultimate romantic introduction sometime in the early 1990s when a young guy named Michael Porter with a bag of ice strapped on each of his knees was on his way out of a YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio, where he had been practicing with his basketball team and came across a young woman; Lisa Becker, who was about to become a part of the Women’s basketball team and was on her way in. What began that day in the gym birthed eight kids twenty years later with the former Division-l athletes as the matriarch and patriarch of the first family of Columbia basketball.

Talking about the rest of the family; Robin Pingeton, the Missouri women’s basketball Coach is Lisa’s sister, Michael Sr currently works as an assistant coach for the MU women’s team. The older Porter daughters Bri and Cierra; were part of the Rock Bridge Girls basketball team who earned three straight state titles. Bri later moved to Missouri while Cierra is scheduled to join her after her final run as a Bruin. According to ESPN, the eldest son Michael Porter Jr is the No.2 nationally in the 2017 class and the leader of the top-ranked boy’s basketball team of Tolton and his younger brother Jontay is a freshman for the Trailblazers and also a D-I prospect. The younger four Porters namely Coban, Jevon, Izaak, and Jayda are all active basketball players and soon, it is expected that Columbia will be awash with Porter basketballers for the foreseeable future.

The matriarch of the Porter family Lisa, was quite the baller herself. During her active years in the field of play, with a high average of 58.7 points per game in high school, she was quite an indefatigable player. She played college basketball for the University of Iowa and played professional basketball in France. More importantly, she played in the United States Olympic Festival North Team in 1983 and the USA William Jones Cup Team of 1985. With all her achievements, she is definitely worthy to be counted as one of the legends of yesterday.
