When Donald Trump won the 2016 US Presidential election, among other things, it was certain America was going to have a First Lady like no other in Melania Trump. Just like her husband, she was not the “regular” kind of political figure, her background and history made sure of that.
It is difficult to ignore the shadow cast by her husband, Donald Trump whose larger than life persona is evident. Sometimes, it takes a conscious effort to remember that there is a Melania Trump within the White House. She has proven not to be the typical First Lady most Americans down the years have grown accustomed to, embroiled in controversies, attacked and criticized unfairly but she is still ultimately her own woman.
Melania Trump Bio
She was born in Novo Mesto on April 26, 1970, in the then communist Yugoslavia (in what is today called Slovenia). At the time of her birth, she was named Melanija Knavs. She grew up in modest surroundings living in a housing block in Sevnica which is situated in the Lower Sava Valley. Her family would later move to a two-storey house in Sevnica.
She attended high school at the High School of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia whilst living in a high-rise apartment in Ljubljana. Later on, she enrolled at the University of Ljubljana to study Architecture and Design but abandoned her studies after a year.
As she has always wanted to be a model, at the age of sixteen, Melania started working with Stane Jerko, a fashion photographer from Slovenia. At eighteen she signed with a modelling agency in Milan. By the time she started modelling, she transcribed her last name “Knavs” which is Slovene to a more German “Knauss”.
In 1992, Melania was named by the ‘Jana’ magazine as the runner-up in the ‘Look of the Year’ contest held in Ljubljana. While still modelling in Milan, she did same for fashion houses in Paris and during this spell, she met Paolo Zampolli, Metropolitan Models co-owner who convinced her to move to the United States.
In 1996, Melania arrived in New York and went on to be quite a successful model, working with photographers like Helmut Newton and Patrick Demarchelier. She was featured on the cover pages of some popular magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Front, and GQ. It was during this period she changed her name to Melania Knauss. She also has her own label of designer watches alongside skincare products.
Height, Weight, Body Measurements
Before she became the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump was once a glamour model, so, there are no surprises as to how well she has kept her shape down the years. Her body measurements are as follows; she stands at a height of 5’ 11” and weighs in at 62kg. Her bra size is 34D and the cup size D. Her shoe size is 10 (US) and dress size 6 (US). Her vital statistics come in at 38-26-37.
Melania was born into a modest Slovene home. Her father, Viktor Knavs hailed from a town close to Novo Mesto, Radece, he managed cars as well as motorcycle dealerships and her mother, Amalija Knavs was from the village of Raka, she earned a living making clothes for children under a manufacturer named Jutranjka based in Sevnica.
Melania was not the only child of her parents, she has a sister, Ines Knauss and a half-brother, Denis Cigelnjak, from a relationship her father had previously. Melania Trump and Denis do not seem to be in talking terms as she had previously denied his existence. Her family currently reside in the US.
Melania met Donald Trump for the first time in 1998, at a Fashion Week party hosted in New York by Donald’s friend and Italian businessman, Paolo Zampolli. Donald, at the time, had already separated from his second wife, Marla Maples.
They began dating and got engaged in 2004. On January 22, 2005, Melania wedded Donald Trump at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida. The reception was held at Trump’s ‘Mar-a-Lago’ estate. Fast forward to twelve months later, Melania gave birth to her first child and Donald Trump’s fifth, Barron William Trump.
A mainstay of the Trump Presidency has been controversy, a few of which have bothered on the President’s inappropriate behavior with women and in some cases, allegations of outright infidelity. Amidst all the seeming turmoil, the First Lady has managed to keep up appearances, thereby shooting down any rumour of an imminent divorce.
