Megan Rapinoe is a U.S professional soccer player who currently plays for Seattle Reign FC as a midfielder/winger. Internationally known for her crafty style of play, Rapinoe is a member of the U.S women national soccer team, in fact, she was part of the team that helped the U.S win silver at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, gold at the 2012 London Olympics and at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

At the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, it was Rapinoe’s amazing cross to Abby Wambach in the 122nd minute of the quarterfinals match against Brazil that brought about the equalizer goal which eventually led to the U.S winning the game after the penalty shootout.

Megan Rapinoe’s Bio

Megan’s full name is Megan Anna Rapinoe and she was born on the 5th day of July 1985 in Redding, California, where she also grew up. Megan is one of the six children born to her parents – Jim and Denise Rapinoe.

She is a twin and her twin sister’s name is Rachael. Her twin sister is also a soccer player who previously played in the U.S women’s national under-23 soccer team and also for Iceland’s Stjarnan Women.

Career

Their father actually laid the foundation and the love for soccer for little Megan who spent most of her early years playing with the various teams her father coached. She attended Foothill High School, but rather than play soccer there, Rapinoe, chose to play for the Elk Grove Pride (now Sacramento Pride) of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

In her school, she competed in track both as a freshman and a sophomore. She also played basketball both as a freshman, sophomore, and senior; and was always on the honor list every semester and was soon named All-American (both as a junior and senior) by National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and also by Parade.

In 1999, Megan participated in the under-14 Northern California state Olympic Development Program (ODP) team and in 2002, she also among the regional ODP team. In 2014, she was named to McDonald’s All-American Game.

She played for the Elk Grove Pride (now Sacramento Pride) until 2005. After high school, Megan Rapinoe and her sister Rachael headed to the University of Portland, Portland, Oregon where they played for the Portland Pilots on full scholarships. She was also part of the soccer team that represented the U.S at the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, where they finished third.

In 2009, she was selected 2nd overall by the Chicago Red Stars in the 2009 WPS Draft to play in the inaugural season of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). She was later named the league’s All-Star Team and went on to participate in the 2009 WPS All-Star Game against Swedish Damallsvenskan champions, Umeå IK.

In 2011, Megan Rapinoe signed with Australian W-League team, Sydney FC as a guest player in two of their matches. The next year, she alongside fellow national team members – Alex Morgan, Stephanie Cox, Hope Solo, and Sydney Leroux – played with the Seattle Sounders Women in between camps with the national team as they prepared for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

She was with the French side, Olympique Lyonnais for six months that spanned from 2013–14, and after her time with Lyonnais expired, she signed on with Seattle Reign FC, where she has remained till date.

In a 2012 interview with Out magazine, Rapinoe came out as a lesbian and revealed that she has been in a relationship with Australian soccer player, Sarah Walsh since 2009. The following year, they called it quits after being together for five years.

After the spilt, Megan dated singer and songwriter, Sera Cahoone. The duo announced their engagement in August 2015 and January 2017, Megan Rapinoe revealed that their wedding plans were on hold.

Later in 2017, Seattle Storm player Sue Bird in an on ESPNW revealed she is gay and that Megan Rapinoe is her girlfriend. Rapinoe would later confirm that they had been dating since fall of 2016.
