Mark Richard Hamill comes from a large family of seven children – three boys and five girls. His parents gave birth to him in Oakland, California on September 25, 1951. His father, William Thomas Hill was a U.S. Navy Captain. His mother, Virginia Suzanne is half Swedish and half English.

Due to his father’s occupation, the Hamill family moved around a lot. This meant that Hamill and his siblings attended numerous schools. In his pre-high school years, Mark attended Walsingham Academy and Poe Middle School. At 11 years of age, his family relocated to San Diego where he went to Hale Junior High School. His first role at the beginning of his career was in the television soap opera, General Hospital. This series was listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest-running soap opera produced in America. He also had a role in a short-lived situation comedy The Texas Wheelers. He has also had guest appearances on The Partridge Family, One Day At a Time and The Bill Cosby Show. His portfolio includes TV films such as Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic.

The movie’s unprecedented success in 1977 sparked two sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
