The game of Tennis. Big court, a racket and a ball for hitting. Well, if you are a fan of the game then you must have heard of the female competitor and downright superstar, Maria Sharapova.
Maria Sharapova Bio
Earlier in life, before her birth, the parents of Maria, fled their home in Gomel, Belarus. Reason being that the Chernobyl disaster had just occurred, and the year of that tragedy was 1986. This would come to shape some of the tennis player’s charitable efforts later on in life. In 1987, Maria Sharapova was born to her parents, Yuri Sharapova and Yelena Sharapova on the 19th April 1987 in Nyagan, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (at the time).
She was born Maria Yuryevna Sharapova. Tennis for Sharapova began at a very young age. She was quite the player that she caught the attention of Martina Nvratilova, a Czech–born American tennis star. Martina was able to suggest and get Sharapova to move to the United States, Florida to be precise in 1994. She would, later on, earn a scholarship to a tennis academy and begin to hone her skill set even further to become better at her game.
She made her international debut and turned pro in 2001, she was just 14 years old at the time. Sharapova is one of the tallest women in tennis and by the time she turned pro, the women’s game was shifting toward a power-based game and this seemed to align well with Maria, as she had a dominating style of play. She has used this style of play, going forward to dominate the game for a while.
Maria also uses her wealth and influence to reach out to the less privileged in society via the Maria Sharapova Foundation. The foundation gives out scholarships to children, with an emphasis on Belarus. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.
Maria has been extremely successful in her chosen profession. At the start of her career early on, she competed in every single Grand Slam event in 2003 and made her best finish that year when she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. That same year she went on to win her very first Women’s Tennis Association also known as WTA titles in Quebec City and Tokyo. She didn’t let that type of success deter her from focusing on the prospect of greater victories as she went on in 2004 to beat her rival, Serena Williams in the final at Wimbledon to win her very first Grand Slam.
In August 2005 Maria Sharapova achieved even more success as she was ranked number one in the world for the first time in her career. Also in 2005, she made the semifinals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and as well as the US Open. Sharapova went on to win the US Open in 2006 and she also clinched the Australian Open in 2008, that being her third Grand Slam title.
Maria suffered injuries but would later come back to court strong as she came back in 2009 to win several WTA titles but no Grand Slam. 2011 was, however, a better year Grand Slam-wise as she went on to win the French Open and along the way making herself only the seventh female player to complete a career Grand Slam.
Aside from being an absolute sensation by herself, Maria Sharapova has also made her nation proud by winning a silver medal for Russia at the London Olympic Games. She has five Grand Slam wins to her name as she won the French Open in 2014. She has won 355 WTA titles and 4 ITF titles alongside winning 592 games in her career.
At some point in 2006, she was estimated to be raking in $18 million annually. It is fairly easy to see that Maria has enjoyed a great career and her net worth would suggest that as well, she is worth $125 million.
One of the key assets to her game has been her height and she stands at 6’ 2” whilst dominating the ground. Other body measurements are 34-24-36. She weighs in at approximately 150 lbs.
Husband, Novak Djokovic Romance
Maria Sharapova is beautiful, there is no need to mince words about that at all. So it is no wonder that she has been with a few men in her life but she is still unmarried. Some of her boyfriends have been rather famous as well, that would include Adam Levine, Sasha Vujacic, and Grigor Dimitrov.
There have been rumors as to her relationship with tennis star, Novak Djokovic but they are not a couple. Just two good friends who have great respect for each other.
