Mac Miller is an indispensable name on the list of self-made artists. The Pittsburgh rapper is also self-made and an “alter-ego” kind of guy. Little wonder his stage name, Mac Miller, is different from his name as a record producer, Larry Fisherman.
In 2011, the serial rapper became the first artist since 1995, to debut an independent album at the top spot of the US Billboard 200. In the relatively short time that Miller has been around, he has put out more than twelve projects, counting mixtapes and studio albums.
How He Began
Mac Miller, whose birth name is Malcolm James McCormick was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 19, 1992. Mac was raised Jewish which was his mother’s religion. His Christian father, Mark McCormick is an architect and his mother, Karen Meyers is a photographer.
Malcolm went to Winchester Thurston School and subsequently, Taylor Allderdice High School. He was a very active student who used to get involved in every sport and was a regular at high school parties.
Miller’s first love when it came to music was singing, not rapping. He is a self-taught musician and taught himself how to play the drums, piano, bass and guitar. However, once he fell in love with hip-hop, there was no turning back.
He started rapping when he was fourteen and used to go by the name “EZ Mac”. His first project, a mixtape came in 2007, when he was 15. It was titled But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy. At the time, Miller was also a member of the rap duo The Ill Spoken along with fellow Pittsburgh emcee, Beedie. They had a mixtape together titled How High in 2008. The rapper released his next two mixtapes Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life in 2009.
Mac Miller signed to Rostrum Records, a notable independent record label in 2010. He had caught the attention of the label’s president Benjy Grinberg, while he was working on his K.I.D.S mixtape. At the time, he was getting the attention of other record companies but decided to go with Grinberg. His two main reasons were that Rostrum operated from his hometown and had ties to big acts like Wiz Khalifa.
The mixtape that got him his record deal was released under Rostrum in August of 2010. Later in 2010 on his first ever tour, he sold out every location. The tour was tagged the Incredibly Dope Tour. Miller rounded up the year with two Pittsburgh hip-hop awards.
In March 2011, Mac released his fifth project, Best Day Ever. The mixtape featured hit songs like Donald Trump and All Around The World. The production was handled by the likes of Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids and 9th Wonder. In the same month, he released a six-track EP titled On And On And Beyond and later, another mixtape titled I Love Life, Thank You. This project involved acts such as Bun B and Talib Kweli.
The remainder of 2011 would see him feature on the remix of Maroon 5’s song, Moves Like Jagger and his first album, Blue Slide Park. Blue Slide Park debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200, recording 144,000 sales in its first week. He also made it into XXL Magazine’s compilation of the Freshmen Class of 2011.
Mac’s seventh mixtape came on March 23, 2012, titled Macadelic. He went on to release several singles and music videos throughout the year and worked with names like Pharell Williams and rapper Schoolboy Q.
In November 2012, Miller released his first alter-ego project, a jazz EP titled You, exclusively available on iTunes. There was no rapping here, just Miller exercising his vocal dexterity over lounging jazz instrumentals. The project was released under the name Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival.
In 2013, Miller released his second album titled Watching Movies With the Sound Off, a project he described as showing his vulnerability and being introspective. It debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 chart and moved 101,000 units in its first week. He also released an instrumental-only mixtape, Run-On Sentences, under his production pseudonym, Larry Fisherman. On February 26, 2013, he premiered his first reality TV series. It ran for six episodes on MTV2 and was titled Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family.
The Pittsburgh emcee moved on from Rostrum Records in 2014. He signed a recording contract and distribution deal with Warner Bros. Music for his label, REMember Music, that he launched in 2013. The deal is reported to be worth $10 million. He released his third and fourth studio albums, GO: OD AM and The Divine Feminine under his new label.
Miller’s influences include stars like Lauryn Hill, Beastie Boys, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest and most importantly, Wiz Khalifa. He refers to the rapper as his big brother within and outside business circles.
In 2012, during the early years of his fame, he got addicted to “purple drank”, the street name for a mixture of promethazine and codeine. He used it to cope with the pressure and demands of the industry and his career. Eventually, he weaned himself of it in November 2012 before he started working on his reality show.
He has also been sued severally for copyright infringement on two of his mixtapes. He was arrested along with some of his friends for possession of marijuana in 2011 while on tour. They were released the next day, however.
Mac Miller Girlfriend, Height
As far as anyone knows, prior to 2013, Miller has only been in one relationship. He had met her in middle school and they dated for four years, culminating in 2013. No record shows her name.
These four years included the period he worked on his Macadelic mixtape. He later admitted that a good number of the songs on the project were about his relationship with his girlfriend.
Miller stands at a height of 5 feet 7 inches (1.75m).
Mac Miller Relationship With Ariana Grande
Mac Miller is dating the singer, Ariana Grande. Whether consciously or otherwise, Mac and Ariana began feeding the rumour mills with fodder when the singer brought him on stage during her set at Billboard’s Hot 100 Music Festival. They were also spotted in each other’s company at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Mac and Ariana have also featured each other. First was one Ariana’s breakout song The Way in 2013 and Miller’s slow jam My Favorite Part.
The duo continued to get comfy with each other until Ariana finally made it official when she confirmed that they were dating. She did this in September 2016 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Mac Miller Net Worth
There is no doubt that Miller will be worth much more had he released more studio albums instead of mixtapes. Nevertheless, he has quickly established himself as one of the more popular acts in the mainstream hip-hop scene.
According to Celebrity Networth, Mac Miller has a net worth is $14 million.
