Loyle Carner is a British rapper/hip-hop artist and actor. His very first studio album, Yesterday’s Gone which he released in 2017, was nominated for the 2017 Mercury Prize a.k.a. the Brit Awards. Even though he lost out on that, Carner kept firing and got another nomination at the 2018 Brit awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Male Solo Artist.
He was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2016 Longlist on the tails of his highly successful debut EP. Carner had a massive UK/Irish tour in late 2017 which had him perform at sold-out shows in Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and London. Before that, he had a number of high profile festival performances including Latitude, Bestival, Truck and several others. Loyle Carner was indeed one of the most promising talents out of the UK in 2017.
Loyle Carner was born on October 6, 1994, in the Central London district of Lambeth. His birth name is Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner, he derived the stage name “Loyle Carner” as a misconstruction of his bifurcated last name Coyle-Larner.
He started his secondary education at Whitgift School, an independent all-boys school in South Croydon. He proceeded to The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon (alma mater of Amy Winehouse and Adele) to pursue a degree. His education was cut short in 2014 due to the death of his beloved stepfather. His stepfather had suffered fatal complications of epilepsy. This caused Carner to move back home to support his family.
In 2008, the young Loyle Carner got his first movie role in the 2008 Warner Bros epic adventure film 10,000 BC. While his acting career has only a handful of appearances, Carner has been firing on all cylinders with his music career.
He first got noticed in the UK music scene when he was featured by Rejjie Snow on his 1992 track which went viral in 2013. A year later, Loyle Carner released his own debut EP titled A Little Late. All but one of the songs on this debut EP were produced by Carner’s best friend Rebel Kleff. A Little Late was not only well received, it actually caused a stir in the British hip-hop scene.
Loyle Carner has been on support tours with Kate Tempest, Joey Bada$$ and Atmosphere. It was a dream come true for the South London rapper when he got to support one of his biggest idols Nas on the Bristol O2 academy stage in August 2016. Carner made a return to the O2 Academy Brixton in 2017 to promote his debut album with a headlining show.
Loyle Carner is currently 23 years old. Having started his music career on such a brilliant note, he is certainly one to watch out for in the international music scene.

Carner’s biological father whom he had very little contact with is from Guyana, a sovereign state in the mainland of South America. He was raised by his mother Jean and stepfather Nicholas Stevens in South Croydon in South London. Carner’s mother is a special-needs teacher. He has one step-sibling, a younger brother named Ryan.
The young Carner was very much attached to his late stepfather. He named his 2016 tour after former Man United player Eric Cantona, who was his step father’s idol. Carner frequently performs at shows and concerts wearing his late step father’s Eric Cantona jersey.
