Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart’s Relationship Timeline and Why They Split

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse dated on and off for several years and have played much-loved couple ‘Bughead’ on Riverdale, and in real life. Though the couple were largely private about their relationship, Sprouse confirmed the former pair’s split in August 2020. Reasons for their split have remained unknown

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart are both American actors; the former has been active in the movie industry since 1993 when he began playing Patrick Kelly in Grace Under Fire, an ABC sitcom that aired from 1993 to 1998.

His other popular television roles include Cody Martain in the Disney series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, a character he has reprised in other TV shows and films like The Suite Life on Deck, Wizards of Waverly Places, Hannah Montana, I’m in the Band, and The Suite Life Movie. After all of those, his next major TV role came in 2017 when he started portraying Jughead Jones in The CW teen drama television series, Riverdale.

Lili Reinhart only began her career in 2010 when she played Rachel in a short film titled For Today and then Leah in the “Sticks and Stone” episode of children’s television show, Scientastic!. Since then, she has pulled off dozens of roles across the small and big screens but her most notable roles are as Annabelle in the 2019 crime comedy-drama film, Hustler, and Betty Cooper in Riverdale. Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart are playing two of the main characters in Riverdale and it was on the set of the show that their love story began.

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart’s Relationship Began In 2017 On The Set of Riverdale

Riverdale began airing on the 26th of January 2017 to positive reviews. The CW show quickly gained a massive fan base with Cole and Lili becoming the favorite couple on the show. Before the month ran out, it was already being rumored that the actors were lovers in real life. Although there was nothing that called for this claim, except that the two had been seen together in public, February 2017 gave people reasons to suspect that there was more to them other than friendship.

In the said month, the actress shared a sexy picture of herself on Twitter and captioned it with a peach emoji. The actor reacted to the picture with a comic strip that said “tempt me!” and that was it for many people – they now have the confirmation that the two were dating. But then, nothing was heard from the actors in the months that followed apart from some pictures of Lili that Cole shared on his Instagram page. Although nothing about the pictures and the comment that came with them confirmed that he was sharing pictures of his girlfriend, people took it as another proof that the two were lovers.

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart continued to tease that they were dating until they confirmed it on Cole’s 25th birthday in August 2017. Earlier in June, Lili left the heart-eyed, fire, and thirst emojis on a picture of Cole on Twitter, and then the following month, it was reported that the two were seen holding hands and kissing at a Comic-Con party in San Diego.

Reinhart Subtly Confirmed They Were Dating While Celebrating Sprouse’s 25th Birthday On Instagram In August 2017

In August 2017, Lili Reinhart took to Instagram to celebrate Sprouse’s 25th birthday in a way that reinforced the belief that they were dating. She related that the actor had shown her more beautiful places the previous year than she had ever seen in her entire life, thanking him for the adventures they’ve had and expressed hope to have many more. However, nothing changed thereafter as they continued to avoid questions about what is going on between them.

November came and Cole Sprouse was featured in People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue. In an interview that followed, the actor refused to confirm the relationship, contending that he had to preserve his privacy and stop people from feeling they are entitled to know about what goes on in his personal life. Lili expressed a similar sentiment in a January 2018 interview with V Magazine. Noting that it’s her private life, she stated that she is not ready to publicly talk about her relationship.

A few months later, precisely in April 2018, the two were seen in the streets of Paris kissing and holding hands. They were also seen together in Mexico that same month. In May, they made their first public appearance as a couple as they were seen on the red carpet of the Met Gala. Before the year ran out, there were no more doubts that the two were in a relationship as their social media pages were littered with pictures about each other.

It Was First Reported In July 2019 That The Two Had Parted Ways

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart continued to date but relentlessly kept details of the relationship away from the public. In July 2019, just after they attended Comic-Con, it started circulating that they had ended the relationship. Several notable publications, including US Weekly, E! News, and People, ran the story, citing sources close to the two who reportedly related that they had been having issues all along and were never going to last.

The actors had a good time debunking these reports online, they continued to comment on each other’s posts and it became clear that they were still together. This is no longer so as Sprouse shared in August 2020 that they had parted ways.

The Former Couple Ended Their Relationship In March 2020 For Reasons That Have Remained Unknown

Cole marked his 28th birthday on the 4th of August 2020. Lili Reinhart didn’t share any post on her social media pages to celebrate him as she had done in the previous years. This gave rise to speculations about a break up which Sprouse confirmed on the 19th of that same month in an Instagram post.

The actor related that he and Lili initially separated in January of 2020 and “decided to more permanently split in March”. While one can conclude from what he shared that they had an amicable breakup, what led to it has been left to speculation.

A few weeks later, Reinhart had an interview with Refinery29 wherein she discussed several things that revolve around the struggles she has faced. Some of the things she said were linked with her breakup with Cole but she wasted no time in dismissing this. She tweeted that she was talking about her struggles with depression, adding that she would never be open about a breakup in such a manner.
