Born in Illinois in 1955 and raised in Edwardsville, Illinois alongside her two other siblings, Laurie grew up having an interest in stage performance but her aptitude for stage acting became apparent in her years at Illinois State University, where she obtained her bachelor of arts in theatre in 1977. Before accepting to major in Theatre, Laurie tried majoring in German – so she could be an interpreter and Anthropologist.
