The Cowboys notwithstanding, basketball was the family game. Marvin was a high school basketball legend, as was LaVontae – LaMarcus’ older brother. LaMarcus was often the last boy picked in ‘pick-up games’. Sadly, basketball was a lesson in humiliation for most of his childhood. It did not help that his dad had a drinking problem and the fact that the lights were shut off because sometimes the bills didn’t get paid on time. His father, Marvin, wasn’t very involved in LaMarcus’s life. By the time LaMarcus reached his teen years, his mother had kicked his father out of the house.
At the end of the day, LaMarcus channeled all this to become a player and needless to say, that dedication paid off for him.
