Even though he was born in Melbourne, his parents were Americans which meant he did not stay in Australia for long as his family which consisted at the time of his father, Drederick Irving, his mother, Elizabeth Irving, and his older sister, Asia Irving moved back to the United States from the suburbs of Kew in Melbourne when he was just two years old. Their initial stay in Australia was because his father, Drederick played basketball for the Bulleen Boomers in Australia during his playing career. We will have more on Irving’s fathers’ basketball career much later.

Not long after the family relocated to the United States, Irving’s mother, Elizabeth Irving got ill and never recovered from the illness. She died when Irving was four years old. Upon the death of his mother, his aunties played a great role in his upbringing. Being born in Australia, Irving holds an Australian nationality and also that of the United States as his parents originate from the US. So Kyrie Irving holds the dual nationality of both Australia and the United States of America. His ethnicity is African American. His mother originally descends from the Great Sioux Nation.

Irving watched his father as he participated in basketball adult-league games in New Jersey and his love for and interest in the game grew. After taking part in the games which held in school during his fourth grade, he mind was made up about playing professional basketball in the NBA. He wrote it out on the door of his closet that he was going to be selected for the NBA and added the words “I promise” which he underlined three times. He started honing his skills at the Boston University basketball skills camp and by the time he was in fifth grade, he got a scholarship offer by the then-coach of the college’s basketball team, Dennis Wolff, to study at the Boston University.
