Twin Peaks is one of the first TV series Kyle MacLachlan appeared in. He made his film debut with Dune in the role of Paul Atreides in 1984. Five years later, he recorded his first TV appearance as Bobby O’Connor in the TV film, Dream Breakers (1989). However, he will probably forever be identified with his role in the mystery horror drama television series, Twin Peaks.

In Twin Peaks, MacLachlan played an eccentric FBI agent named Dale Cooper who had an unconventional method of policing. After the mysterious death of a popular high school student, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), Cooper arrives in Twin Peaks shortly after, in 1989 to investigate her brutal murder.

He first appeared in the pilot episode originally titled Northwest Passage. The episode follows Dale Cooper and Twin Peaks’ sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean) as they investigate Palmer’s murder. He believes the murder has connections to a murder case that occurred the previous year. The series premiered on the ABC network on 8th April 1990 and became one of the top-rated series of 1990. Sadly, it was canceled after its second season, in 1991 as ratings declined.

During his investigation, Dale Cooper found out that the killer was Laura’s father, Leland Palmer (Ray Wise). Palmer carried out the act while possessed by a demonic entity—Killer BOB. The original season ended on a cliffhanger. Cooper was trapped into the Black Lodge, an extra-dimensional place by BOB. He subsequently, let out Cooper’s doppelgänger who he uses as his physical access to the world.

Kyle MacLachlan reprised his role in the 1992 film prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. In 2017, MacLachlan returned to lead an ensemble both new and returning cast members in the third season of 18 episodes titled Twin Peaks: The Returning. Set 25 years after the events of the original series, it debuted on the 21st of May 2017 with its finale airing on September 17, 2017. The season garnered critical acclaim, with various publications dubbing it the best television show of 2017.

MacLachlan’s character was last seen in the eighteenth and final episode of the third season, Part 18, also known as The Return, Part 18. In the episode, he was able to time travel back to the night of Laura Palmer’s murder and impeded her death.
