If a list of actors who’ve starred in the most gender-bending roles is compiled, then Katherine Moennig will surely appear in it. Some of the roles that would be counted include that of Jacqueline ‘Jake’ Pratt in the television series Young Americans (2000) and Cheryl Avery in a 2003 episode of Law & Order: SVU. Moening is more active on the small screen and is best known for her roles in The L Word, Three Rivers, and Ray Donovan. In addition to acting in film and TV, Moennig has quite an impressive list of theatrical features. Let’s get to know her some more.
Who Is Katherine Moennig? – Bio
Katherine Moennig is an American actress who hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born Katherine Sian Moennig on December 29, 1977. Kath had a truckload of artistic genes passed to her by her parents. Her dad William H. Moennig III makes the violin, a craft that could have something to do with his own father William Moennig who grew up in Markneukirchen, a small town in Germany famed for musical instruments. Additionally, he is an incredible artist who can paint, draw and sculpt anything he sees. On the other hand, Kath’s mom, Mary Zahn, was a ballerina.
Did you know that Katherine Moennig is the first cousin of actors Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Paltrow? Her dad is the maternal half-sister of veteran actress Blythe Danner who is Gwyneth Paltrow’s mom. That makes Blythe and her brother Harry Danner who is also an actor Moennig’s half-aunt and half-uncle respectively.
Growing up on the 12th floor of an apartment building in Philly, Moening who became a tomboy at an early age would spend most of her time hanging out with her male neighbors. Her first interest in acting was sparked when she was 10 years old, a time when her best friend motivated her to act in a children’s theater. However, Moennig wasn’t immediately sure that acting was what she wanted to do in the long run until much later in life.
For a long time in her teenage years, Moennig was without focus. She didn’t seem to be quite interested in academics and would often sneak out to hang with friends who were not even her schoolmates. Occasionally she would travel to New York City with those friends to attend parties. At some point in her life, she thought she’d end up as a doorman.
However, after high school, Moennig seemed to have made up her mind on what to do – pursue an acting career. It was her way of getting away from Philly where she didn’t want to be tempted into working in her dad’s violin business. Her focus started to build when she enroled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was 18 years old at the time.
Luckily for Moennig, her parents who had always understood her lack of interest in academics supported her. Like most aspiring actors, Kath began by doing commercials, one of which was for the now-defunct Fleet Bank.
It didn’t take long before Kath found her footing in Hollywood. She greatly impressed in her debut film role which came in the drama series Young Americans. Moennig has since never looked back. Some of her earliest films would include Love the Hard Way and The Shipping News.
Kath’s role as Shane McCutcheon in the Lesbian series The L World became a big break in her career opening the doors to other gigs that soon follow.
Is She Gay/Lesbian, Engaged, Or Married?
It is no secret that Katherine Moening is openly gay/lesbian. She has portrayed a lesbian/queer/trans character in a handful of films and TV shows. Kath is quite secretive when it comes to her romantic life. However, over the years, she has been linked with a number of women.
Among them are Holly Miranda, Amanda Moore, and Evan Rachel Wood. The later, though short-lived, received much media interest. News reporters spotted them (pictured) on a date outside a restaurant in West Hollywood, California in October 2014. Wood had come out as bisexual three years back in 2012.
Moennig’s relationship with Woods was reported to have ended in November of the same year. However, the two remain close friends. From the facts we’ve gathered, Katherine Moennig is most likely single at the time of writing and is neither engaged nor married. For the meantime, it appears her dogs and cats are making sure her singlehood isn’t boring. Her Instagram feed says it all.
