Karolína Plíšková is a former world number 1 tennis player who became the first person to ever reach that ranking without ever winning a Grand Slam tournament. The ten-time singles and five-time doubles Czezch WTA champion is also known for being one-half of the first set of twins to ever win a doubles title together on the WTA Tour.
Karolína Plíšková is the daughter of Radek and Martina Plíšková. She was born as a twin on the 21st of March 1992 in Louny, Czechoslovakia. While growing up, the Plíšková girls fell in love with the sport of tennis after watching players like Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, and Marat Safin play the game before deciding to play professionally.
Plíšková first announced her arrival on the world stage at the 2010 junior Australian Open which she won. Her first appearance at a senior Grand Slam tournament was at the 2012 French Open where she crashed out in the first round at the hands of Marion Bartoli. The following year, Plíšková tasted her first WTA Tour victory at the hardcourts of Kuala Lumpur in the 2013 Malaysian Open. That same year, she won her first doubles event at the Generali Ladies Linz tournament in Austria.
In 2014, the fast-rising Czech superstar enjoyed a breakthrough year as she managed a number of finals appearances in addition to a few semifinal and quarterfinal finishes. During that time, she also won two tournaments; the Korea Open and the Generali Ladies Linz which all counted in propelling her to the world number 24 rank by the end of the year.
In 2015, Karolína Plíšková set her eyes on attaining a top 10 rank. She began the year by defeating former world number 1 Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Brisbane International tournament. She then reached the final of the 2015 Apia International Sydney which she lost before getting knock out in the third round of the year’s first Grand Slam in Australia. She then reached the finals of the 2015 Dubai Duty-Free Championships, beating Ana Ivanovic along the way. There were a number of other notable appearances before Plíšková was able to win her fourth career WTA title at her home tournament in Prague. By the end of the year, she was leading in finals appearances having made it to six but only managing to win one. This put her one place short in achieving her goal as she managed a world number 11 rank at the end of the year.
Plíšková kept up her performances in 2016, notably beating the Williams sisters en route to the final of the US Open where she was defeated by Angelique Kerber. That, in addition to completing a Fed Cup hat-trick with her Czech teammates and winning the Western & Southern Open, put her in a top 5 spot. The following year, however, Karolína Plíšková was able to reach the WTA world No. 1 spot following a French Open semifinal berth.

She further holds the record for the most aces (31) in a WTA Tour match with one singles and three doubles titles to her name. That is in addition to her nine singles and eight doubles titles from the ITF Women’s Circuit.
Life has not exactly been rosy for the twin tennis superstars. When they were 13 years old, their father, Radek Plíšková, was sent to jail for two years over charges related to tax fraud. After serving his sentence, Radek regained his freedom and was able to see his daughters grow to compete on the biggest stages. However, in 2013, he was again arrested and incarcerated for one year.

The tennis star affirmed that she and her boyfriend, who had been dating for three years prior to making the decision to take the next step, actually got engaged during that year’s Wimbledon tournament but opted to keep it a secret.
The couple later exchanged marital vows at a private ceremony in front of close family and friends in Monte Carlo in 2018. It is not clear in what capacity Hrdlička works for his wife, however, Plíšková has confirmed that the two maintain a professional and personal relationship.
