Karl-Anthony Towns plays professional basketball with the National Basketball Association’s Minnesota Timberwolves as a centre. The Dominican-American actually began his NBA career with the team following his selection as 1st overall at the 2015 NBA Draft.

Towns was named to the Dominican Republic basketball national team as a sixteen- year old. Before his NBA career, he played college basketball at the University of Kentucky. As a rookie, Towns won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. Learn more about the player below.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ Bio, Age

Towns was born to an African-American father and a mother of Dominican origin on November 15, 1995, in Edison, New Jersey. He was raised in Piscataway, NJ, before transferring to Theodore Schor Middle School from Our Lady of Fatima School in 2009, he also attended Lake Nelson Seventh-Day Adventist School. He had to repeat the 7th grade at Theodore Schor, in order to gain an extra year of development.

Despite attending these several schools, Karl-Anthony began playing basketball at St. Joseph High School. During his freshman season, he led the school team to state championship which earned him a top position on ESPN’s list of 25 national ranking of high school players. He also led the team to other state titles in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

In 2011, he was selected to play for the Dominican Republic national basketball team as a sixteen-year-old. His selection was based on the fact that his mom is from the Dominican Republic. The team was coached by the University of Kentucky, John Calipari, as well as an NBA head coach and would later finish 3rd at the FIBA Americas Championship in 2011 and 4th at FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament the following year (2012).

At the end of 2012, Karl-Anthony Towns declared his intention to reclassify as a senior and play for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team under coach Calipari. As a senior, Towns recorded an average of 13.4 rebounds, 6.2 blocks and 20.9 points, per game. He won the 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year Award.

After high school, Karl-Anthony headed to the University of Kentucky to study kinesiology and play basketball. He hoped to become a doctor after his basketball career but he left Kentucky after one year for the NBA. As he was still determined to earn a degree, he enrolled in online courses.

During his one year at Kentucky, Karl-Anthony Towns recorded an average of 6.7 rebounds and 10.3 points in 21.1 minutes per game, he also earned NABC and Associated Press’ second-team All-American titles, as well as a third-team All-American by Sporting News. In 2015, Towns, alongside many of his Kentucky teammates declared for the 2015 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

At the 2015 NBA Draft, Towns was selected as the first overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He went ahead to sign his rookie scale contract with the team in July of the same year and made his first appearance in October in a game against Los Angeles Lakers where he hit 12 rebounds and 14 points as a starter. The game ended in a 112–111 win.

By the next month (November), Towns earned the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award, becoming the 7th Timberwolves player to earn an NBA Rookie of the Month honours. In January 2016, he hit 12 rebounds and 32 points in a game against Utah Jazz, although the game ended in a loss, Towns became the youngest player to make such a record behind Kevin Durant in 2008.

In February, he won the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award for the 4th time in a row, becoming the 2nd player in the history of the team to earn the award four consecutive times. By the end of his rookie season, he won the Western Conference Rookie of the Month six times, the NBA Rookie of the Year honours, the NBA All-Rookie First Team honours, among others.

The next season, he recorded his 100th career double-double to become second-youngest player in the history of the NBA to make that mark which was first made by Dwight Howard. At the end of the 2016/2017 season, Karl-Anthony Towns made history as the only player in the NBA to record 2,061 points, 1,007 rebounds, and a 100 3-pointers (101) in a single season.

In March 2018, Towns recorded his best-NBA 60th double-double in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He would later end the season with sixty-eight double-doubles – the highest so far in the NBA.

His Family

Karl-Anthony is the only son of Karl Towns Sr. and Jacqueline Cruz. He has two sisters, Malaika Singleton-Towns and Lachelle Towns. His father also played basketball at Monmouth University and would later serve as a coach at Piscataway Technical High School. While in 5th grade, Towns Jr. would practise with the junior varsity team.

Towns is quite tall. Standing at a height of 7ft (2.13 m), he is much taller than an average basketball player. He weighs 112 kg, which is just perfect for his height. His wingspan measures 2.22 m.
