Karan Brar’s career is one of the many that are uniquely placed to help foster a sense of cultural diversity in the entertainment industry. The American born Indian actor has been active since 2010 and his portfolio and reputation have only continued in an upward direction since then.
Karan started his career with the lead role on Twentieth Century Fox’s Wimpy Kid family “dramedy” movie series. However, he is most known for his time as a Disney star on the show Jessie and its subsequent spinoff, Bunk’d. Since those early years though, he has been trying to diversify his portfolio to take in roles that did not require him speaking in an Indian accent. One of his post-Disney roles includes a minor role in the 2018 Sci-Fi hit movie Pacific Rim: The Uprising.
Karan Brar – Bio, Age
The actor was born to his parents Jasbinder and Harinda Brar, both of Indian heritage in Redmond, Washington, on January 18, 1999. Through his parents, he had an older sister, Sabreena. They were both raised in Bothell, Washington where Karan attended Cedar Wood Elementary School and eventually took acting classes.
Unlike many child stars, Karan Brar did not grow up wanting to be an actor, even though his father was one. In his early years, he initially tried his hands out at various kinds of sports, but nothing stuck. Eventually, he took some acting classes on the recommendation of his father and soon found that he felt more at home on stage than he ever did playing any sport. By the age of eight, he had hired an agent and started booking gigs on commercials.
His TV Shows and Commercials
The actor was just 11 years old when he bagged the role of Chirag Gupta, a timid Indian middle schooler in Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010). The movie expanded into a trilogy, requiring him to reprise the role in two sequels: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012). Having been born in America, Brar has an American accent. So for these movies, he had to work to perfect his Indian dialect with the help of a dialect coach.
His role as Ravi Ross was undoubtedly the greatest of his early career. While he portrayed the character of Ravi, a 10-year old adopted Indian immigrant boy, in a few other Disney projects, it was his performance on Disney’s Jessie that really thrust him under the spotlight. He was joined on the show by other Disney stars like Debby Ryan, Skai Jackson, and Cameron Boyce.
A much older Karan also reprised the role in 58 episodes of the Jessie spinoff, Bunk’d from 2015 to 2018.
While the actor is happy to be the first Indian on Disney to attain series regular status, he does realize that being an actor requires him to be versatile and not stereotype himself into a particular kind of role.
In a bid to diversify, Karan Brar has taken on other non-Indian related roles. In 2013, he voiced four episodes of Disney Junior’s Sofia the First as the character, Prince Zandar. He also voiced the character Mason in one episode of Mr. Peabody & Sherman the following year. In 2016, he made a guest appearance as Omed, a drug dealer from Afghanistan in an episode of NBC’s The Night Shift. He was also George on the Disney adventure comedy movie The Invisible Sister a year prior.
More recently, the actor got the role to play a young, newly recruited Cadet named Suresh on Universal Pictures’ Pacific Rim; Uprising (2018). He has continued to get roles that have enabled him to break out of the Disney mold and start to build a career that reflects all his strengths as an actor.
