Dwayne Johnson remains undisputed as the most successful WWE star-cum actor. In recent years, The Rock has been rocking our screens with back-to-back hits and we just can’t get enough of him. He is here to stay and we’re all here for it. From The Fast and the Furious franchise where he scored his own spin-off to San Andreas, Central Intelligence, and the focus of this piece, Jumanji The Next Level, Johnson has come a long way from his Scorpion King days when critics were less than impressed by his acting and mocked that he should stick to the ring.
Undeterred, Johnson proved them all wrong. The half-Black and half-Samoan hunk has now become one of the highest-grossing actors of all time with his movies grossing a combined over $3.5 billion and the first Jumanji movie contributed a great deal to that. As the days go by, so does the release date of Jumanji The Next Level draw nearer. The curiosity levels are high and here is everything we know about the Jumanji sequel.
When Does Jumanji The Next Level Come Out?
When filmmakers hit it big – Jumanji big! at the global box office, then chances are that there is going to be a sequel and for Jumanji (first film titled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) which made about a billion from a mere average budget of $100 million, talks about a sequel began almost immediately after those box office numbers became official.
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, the last Jumanji movie was released in 2017 and in addition to Dwayne Johnson, it featured some other big names including funnyman Kevin Hart (whose frequent combo with Johnson have been incredible), one of the Jonas Brothers Nick Jonas, multi-talented entertainer Jack Black, Guardians of Galaxy star Karen Gillan, as well as small screen staple, Bobby Cannavale.
All of these aforementioned stars, in an interview, right after the previous Jumanji movie was released, gave the first hints on the possible storyline of the next Jumanji movie which they then referred to as Jumanji 3 (the 2017 film was only a reboot of the original Jumanji film which began in 1995). The actors had speculated that the next sequel could explore the origin of the film’s title.
By February of 2018 more details on the Jumanji sequel surfaced which included that Jake Kasdan the director for the first film would also be the man behind the cameras for the next sequel. It was also revealed that alongside a couple of others, he would also serve as the screenwriter. Kasdan does know his onions, his other notable projects include Californication, New Girl, and Fresh Off the Boat.
In addition to announcing Kasdan as the director and writer, it was revealed that all the major stars – Johnson, Hart, Black, and Gillian would all be returning to reprise their game world characters.
Soon after, it was revealed that Jumanji The Next Level would be coming out in time for Christmas, precisely on the 11th of December 2019.
Everything Else About Jumanji Next Level
When filming began in January 2019, more details emerged, especially that the cast would include new faces in the persons of Awkwafina (who had her breakthrough in 2018 with the films Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8), Lethal Weapon star, Danny Glover and Danny DeVito who rose to fame in the early 80s for his portrayal of taxi dispatcher Louie De Palmer in the hit TV series, Taxi.
Some other notable names to portray small roles in Jumanji The Next Level include Dania Ramirez, Ashley Scott, and Massi Furlan. The filming of the sequel which took place in undisclosed locations in Atlanta, New Mexico, Calgary, and Hawaii was concluded exactly on the 11th of May 2019 with Johnson in typical fashion taking to his Instagram page to mark the occasion while expressing gratitude to fans and crew. On the first of July 2019, the first trailer was out to the thrill of fans. Thanks to it, we now know that the plot would basically follow another adventure of Spencer and his friends heading back into the most dangerous video game in the world.
