He is believed to have grown up in McPherson as he attended both his high school and college there. He later worked at KMBC-TV, also located in Kansas. While there, he covered the death of Owen Hart as a correspondent. When he left KMBC-TV, he moved over to World Wrestling Federation, (WWF) – currently known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) – on a nine-year contract. He worked as an interviewer, commentator, and presenter at WWE before earning his first assignment as an anchor alongside Dwayne Johnson, popularly known as The Rock.

He later became an assistant to the general manager of RAW at that time, Eric Bischoff. This position lasted from 2003-2006 and he was promoted to executive assistant in 2006. He stayed at this position until 2007 when he took over from John “Bradshaw” Layfield as the lead commentator alongside WWE favorite, Micheal Cole. Later in 2008, Jonathan’s contract with WWF expired and he didn’t deem it necessary to renew it.
