In the Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC) only the strong, tactical and fearless fighters make it to the top. Thus, out of a dire need of money to take care of his then-pregnant girlfriend, Jon Jones made use of the aforementioned qualities innate in him. He called at a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gym for training, had his first fight after a few months, and followed it up with subsequent fights which all ended in victories for him. Today, he is a two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.
Though his story is mostly being portrayed today in a negative light, he still had some good and very good times in the past. Here, we are going to tell you all about the good, not so good and bad part of his life, so read on.
Jon Jones’ Biography (Age)
Jon Jones, who you can also call Bones (nickname) or Jonathan Dwight Jones (full name) was born on July 19, 1987 in Rochester, New York, U.S., into a Christian family headed by Arthur Jones Jr., a pastor at the Pentecostal church in Endicott, New York, and his wife Camille Jones who was a nurse. Sadly, Camille lost her life in a battle with diabetes in June 2017.
Growing up, Jon Jones played American football, just like his brothers did but wrestling took the centre stage in his professional life. He emerged a state wrestling champion at Union Endicott high school in upstate New York. After high school, he began his college studies and was still active in sports. Jon won the national JUCO championship at Lowa Central Community College, showing telltale signs of how good an athlete he was.
He transferred to Morrisville State College to pursue a degree in criminal justice but would drop out to pursue a career in the MMA after he discovered that it was in the fighting sports that his true interest was. Jon Jones initially began fighting in the MMA to raise money to tend to his girlfriend who was pregnant at the time, as his UFC profile informed.
In the MMA, he began like a pro with 6 undefeated records in 3 months having made his debut in April 2008. He was so good that UFC took notice of him almost instantaneously and offered him a fight as a replacement just 2 weeks before the duel day in July 2008.
He fought Andre Gusmão at UFC 87 and won by unanimous decision having displayed takedowns and unorthodox strike patterns hitherto unseen in the sports. Jon fought the likes of Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94, Jake O’Brien at UFC 100, Brandon Vera at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones, former IFL Light Heavyweight Champion Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko who he defeated by TKO with elbows in 1:52 secs of the first round. He also trounced Ryan Bader at UFC 126 in a fight Ryan dominated in the first round but which saw him face his first professional defeat in the second round from a tap-out due to a guillotine choke from a furious Jon Jones.
Bones became the youngest UFC champion after defeating Maurício “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in round 3. He had his first title defence against Quinton Jackson at UFC 135 after recuperating from a hand injury. The fight ended in a victory for him and he has described it as his most favourite of all.
The fearless fighter went on to defend his title against Lyoto Machida at UFC 140, Rashad Evans at UFC 145, Vitor Belfort at UFC 152, Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 after which he had a tie with Tito Ortiz for the most consecutive title defences in UFC light heavyweight history. He successfully defended his title against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, UFC 172 where he fought Glover Teixeira and won by unanimous decision. Even when he fought Daniel Cormier at UFC 178, he still went past him, but little did he know that this fight would be the beginning of his woes.
A month prior to UFC 178, Jon Jones failed a drug test as he tested positive for cocaine. Come April 2015, precisely on the 28, Jon Jones was stripped of his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title, delisted from the official ranking and suspended from the sports indefinitely in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Albuquerque, New Mexico which had him leave an injured pregnant woman in one of the two cars involved in the accident. The witness was an off-duty cop who clearly identified the UFC fighter, documents found in the rented car also clearly had his name on them. Inside the car also was a wrap of marijuana. The once feared fighter was charged with a felony for injuring and abandoning the injured person on purpose. Around that time, he gave an explanation for the events of that night and all that played out in his head; mainly fear of being charged by the police for driving drunk.
He made a comeback to the fighting sports at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017, where he won former Olympian Daniel Cormier to regain his once-treasured UFC Light Heavyweight Championship belt. But for a drug violation in testing positive for Turinabol; a banned substance by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), he was stripped once again of the title. If the charges against turn out to be true, he could face up to 4 years in suspension. This, of course, should mark the end of his career judging by his current age.
Being one of the best fighters in the UFC, Jon Jones’ net worth doesn’t negate popular assumption. He has a net worth of $10 million.
Wife and Family
Jon Jones has two siblings who also took to sports of a lesser combat nature. His elder brother is Arthur Jones III who, in his prime, played American football with the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Redskins as his career progressed and waned. Chandler Jones is the youngest of the trio and is signed to Arizona Cardinals in the NFL. He had a sister named Carmen who died of brain cancer at a tender age.
Jon Jones has remained with the woman he began fighting for all his life. He met Jessie Moses while in high school and they began dating immediately, continued in college despite being at different colleges. While Jon was briefly at Iowa Central Community College, Moses attended Broome Community College in New York.
Their relationship has seen to the birth of 3 daughters; Leah born in 2008, Carmen born in 2009 and Olivia Haven born in 2013. In an interview he granted on December 1, 2016, Jon Jones revealed he has another daughter who is older than his first daughter. However, details of her or her mother are not yet known.
Jon got engaged to Jessie in 2015 and by April 1, 2015, he broadcast the news on his Twitter account. However, following the issues that have bedevilled him recently, probably self-inflicted, a lot haven’t been said of him recently with regards to getting married to her.
