James Acaster is an English writer, actor, and comedian. He has performed for several years at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival and holds the record of being the only artist to earn five consecutive Forster’s Edinburgh Festival Award nominations for Best comedy show.
He won Best International Act from the New Zealand Comedy Guild for his 2013 show, Prompt and a Best International Show Award from the New Zealand International Comedy Festival Awards for his 2014 show, Recognise. He also has two 2015 Chortle awards wins to his name.
Before going into comedy Acaster was a drummer in a few music bands, most notably The Wow! Scenario which reunited in 2017 to complete an album they were yet to finish before splitting up a year earlier.
James Acaster’s Bio
James Acaster was born on January 9, 1985, in Kettering, England. He was raised in Kettering and attended Montagu Secondary School there. After his secondary school, he went on to Northampton College where he studied music. His musical career began with his playing drums in several local bands within the Northamptonshire area. Some of the bands he played drums in are The Wow! Scenario, Three Line Whip, The Capri-Sun Quartet, Pindrop, and The New Hardcore Skiffle Movement.
His stage name while with the Capri-Sun Quartet was William Strawberry. Not long after they began recording the album Stand in the Star in 2007, The Wow! Scenario split up and Acaster decided to take up comedy while trying to figure out his next career move. He, however, announced in 2017 that he had gotten back together with his The Wow! Scenario bandmates to complete the Stand in the Star album which was marked for a 2018 release date.
Acaster’s career in comedy was in full swing by 2009. That year he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe alongside other comedians like Nick Helm and Josh Widdicombe. Acaster supported Josie Long while Long was on tour in 2010. He also supported Milton Jones in 2011 while Jones was on tour.
That same year he had his first solo show titled Amongst Other Things at the Edinburgh Festival. In 2011, he also appeared on Good News Extra, One Night Stand from Bristol, Australia Versus, Chris Addison’s Show and Tell in addition to being one of the hosts of My First Gig.
After a successful performance at the Edinburgh Festival in 2011, he went on to perform his solo show Amongst Other things a variety of venues in the United Kingdom the following year. In 2012, he performs his next show called Prompt at the Edinburgh Festival, it turned out to be very popular among audiences and received positive reviews.
Prompt landed a nomination for the Best Comedy Show at the festival from the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2012. By March 2013, he had performed Prompt at 14 venues in the United Kingdom. In December 2013, he won the best international act award from the New Zealand Comedy Guild. He again earned a nomination for best comedy show from the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards for performing his Lawnmower show at the festival in 2013.
Acaster’s 2014 show Recognize and 2015 show Represent got him his third and fourth best comedy show nomination from Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards. He won him Best International Show from the New Zealand International Comedy Festival Awards for Recognise in 2014. In 2015, Best Show and Best Breakthrough Act Chortle Awards for Recognise in 2015. His fifth Foster’s Edinburgh festival award nomination was earned for his 2016 show, Reset.
Acaster’s first book James Acaster’s Classic Scrapes was published in 2017. The book made the Sunday Times bestseller list. His Netflix show James Acaster: Repertoire was released in 2018.
Wife, Girlfriend, Partner
James was in a romantic relationship with New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo. Matafeo is an accomplished comedian, writer, and performer in her own right with awards and accolades to her name. The relationship came to an end as Matafeo later complained that Acaster was hardly ever around because he was usually on the road, on tours and performances. He found it difficult to spend quality time with her and that she practically spent her days writing and reading.
