7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The BTS Member, J-Hope

1. J-Hope Is The Hope Of BTS

J-Hope, also nicknamed Hobi, is a rapper, songwriter, dancer, and record producer. Born on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea, he was given the name Jung Ho-seok. He adopted J-Hope as his stage name after debuting as a BTS member in 2013  because of his hopeful and joyful attitude. Through his music, he desires to give hope to the people who love him as well as be the hope of BTS.

2. He Was Once a Street Dancer

Before he became a member of BTS, J-Hope gained local fame as a street dancer in his hometown. He has been passionate about dancing from an early age. If he wasn’t a dancer, he would probably be a rapper, simply because he loves music so much. For him, no music, no life.

J-Hope enrolled for dancing classes at Gwangju Music Academy in 4th grade. He joined an underground dance team, NEURON under the name Smile Hoya, where he began to make his mark on the local dance scene. Hobi would later join the Joy Dance Academy and had to travel more than an hour by bus from school to attend; he was so hooked on dance that he didn’t mind the long distance.

He won various local prizes for dance, including finishing first in a national dance competition in 2008. All these he achieved before debuting in showbiz.

3. J-Hope was Turned Down By A Popular K-Pop Boy Band

His skills in dance eventually led him to gain interest in singing as well, prompting him to audition as an idol trainee. Had things worked out differently, he would have been a Got7 member. He auditioned with JYP Entertainment for Got7 but was turned down. Fortunately for Big Entertainment, they opened their door to the dancer and he has become the mood maker for BTS.

J-Hope was the third member to join BTS as a trainee after RM and Suga. He has since been involved in the creation process of every album in BTS’ discography.

J-Hope has come a long way in his career, gaining the respect and admiration of his family in the process. However, it wasn’t always so. The idol had to weather his father’s disapproval of his chosen career to get to where he is today.

Although his father was against his decision to be a dancer, his mother was there for him from the beginning even to the point of working in another country to support him financially. Little wonder he wrote and dedicated a whole song to her.

All that is in the past now. His father not only supports him now, but is also very proud of who he has become. On J-Hope’s first birthday post debut, BTS surprised him with special video letters from the members, managers, and his family. The climax of the video for J-Hope was when his father came on the screen. His father wished him a happy birthday and mentioned how lucky his parents were to have him as a son.
