In fact, Thomas was named so, after James lost a bet with a friend during the 1989 NBA finals when he agreed to name his son after Detroit guard Isiah Thomas if the Pistons beat his favourite club, the Laker. Eventually, the Pistons swept Los Angeles, and the rest is history.
