Colombia is not only famous for its resources such as coffee, emeralds, rich flavorful foods, and paradisal landscapes but also for its rich crop of entertainers and celebrities. There’s hardly any sphere of the industry you would not find them in. From reggaeton singer and songwriter Maluma, the Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, singer cum dancer Shakira, to soccer star James Rodriguez, the country has produced some of the prominent stars in the entertainment and sports arena. A recent member of the fold is Isabella Gomez. The starlet has all it takes to be a superstar – from talents to looks, skills, excellent delivery of dialogues and she intends to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence in her career.

She stars in a daring role as Elena Alvarez in the Netflix original series One Day at a Time. Therein, she plays a gay teen who surprises her conservative grandmother by coming out of the closet. Gomez has also appeared in both Modern Family and Matador.

Isabella Gomez Biography (Age)

Isabella Gomez was born on the 9th day of February 1998, in Medellin, Colombia. She belongs to the Latina ethnicity. At the age of 5, she got interested in acting and has dedicatedly followed it till now. Following her discovery of her affinity with the screen, she began appearing in commercials until she was 10 when her parents moved the family to Orlando, Florida to seek better opportunities for their little girl. While in Florida, she received formal acting training and lessons from a vocal coach to help moderate her accent.

After some years, fully set to take on Tinseltown, the Gomez family decided it was time to move again. This time, they relocated to Los Angeles in 2015. Before then, however, she had already debuted on the small screen in a recurring role as Christina Sandoval in the series, Matador. Soon after, she landed a guest role on the ABC mockumentary family sitcom, Modern Family as Flavia on The Party episode (2016) of the series.

Though the starlet made a statement with her performances on both shows, it wasn’t as loud or acclaimed as the one she was soon to make in her breakthrough role. Isabella Gomez joined the cast of a remake of Norman Lear’s sitcom of the same name, One Day at a Time in 2017.

Her Meteoric Rise to Stardom

The Netflix sitcom became her ticket to wide acclaim and fame. The dramedy revolves around a Hispanic family living in the US, focusing on a single mom who is an Army veteran dealing with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) while trying to keep her family (her kids and her Cuban mother) strong. It also addresses issues that face Latinos and families, in general, living in the USA such as mental illness, love, immigration, sexism, homophobia, politics and racism while still maintaining its sense of humour.

Therein, Isabella Gomez portrays Elena Álvarez, the activist daughter of Penelope who was played by the American actress Justina Machado. Elena is a rarely giddy teenager who’s enthusiastic about social justice issues and determined to make her mark in the world. She is more defined by her intellect than her looks and as such, cares little about her appearance much to the chagrin of her vain abuela (grandmother), Lydia, played by Rita Moreno. During season 1 of the series, she came out to her family as a lesbian and amidst the challenges of not having her father accept her sexual preferences, she started developing a love life in season 2.

While it is rare to see a Latinx LGBTQ character represented in the media, Gomez’s character was a surprising, yet long-awaited addition to TV. It has also received a lot of criticisms from fans, though much on the positive side, for which the actress is grateful that she is contributing to a change. She added that the show has opened her eyes to the possibilities that the acting world holds for her. Besides the chance to juggle both comedy and drama, the former which she never knew she could do, she identifies a lot with her character’s spirit.

Also, with Moreno playing her grandmother, Isabella Gomez is beyond thrilled to go to set each day. Who wouldn’t? Not with an over 7 decades of experience to dish out, there is something new to learn each time one is around her.

Isabella is the only child born to Eliana Meija and Sergio Gomez. They have always been strongly behind their daughter, supporting and motivating her to follow her dreams and excel in her chosen career. The Gomez family is also very open-minded about her role as Elena even though most of them who still live in Colombia initially had trouble understanding why she was playing an LGBTQ character.
