Yes, Fallout 76 is cross-platform albeit on certain platforms. For now, the Bethesda Game Studio video game only allows players on Xbox One and Windows PC the leeway to join forces and make moves to restore “The Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland/Desert Of The Fallout Universe”.
As the world’s experience of online gaming continues to enhance, it triggers increased demand for cross-platform play. Gamers would love to have the leeway to enjoy playtime with friends across multiple platforms and in the process, experience smooth multiplayer action. Fallout 76 has been gathering massive attention since its release in 2018 but the restriction of the number of platforms players can enjoy cross-platform play is now viewed as a shortfall.
What is Fallout 76
Fallout 76 is a game from the stables of Bethesda Game Studio and it is the gaming company’s expedition into what has been described as “The Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland/Desert Of The Fallout Universe”. Those who have experienced it attested to the fact that it is a journey worth taking again and again.
25 years after America was ravaged by nuclear war, Vault Dwellers are enticed out from their shelters to experience a dynamic open world replete with exploration, building projects, and quests – all in a bid to get the society rebuilt. It is up to players to choose the mode of play that suits them – joining forces with friends or playing solo in battling against several formidable threats in the barren landscape.
Fallout 76 is not a game for the fainthearted, this open-world role-playing game is rated 18 and above, thus, only adults can enjoy it. The reason behind this restriction is that players must use machetes, guns, and grenades in this survival-of-the-fittest-journey, needless to say, it is sure to make the weak jittery.
The violence depicted in Fallout 76 is graphic, as there are views of chunks of flesh and flying limbs from enemies and also executions through gunshots to the head which will result in decapitation.
What is Cross-platform
Cross-platform which is sometimes referred to as crossplay is described as the ability to connect and play with players using different platforms. For instance, a player enjoying a game on a PC can connect with another person using consoles like PS4 or PS5 to play the game. They can also play with someone using Xbox One.
Crossplay is simply a great way you can connect with family and friends who are using different consoles and enjoy the same game together.
Is Fallout 76 Cross Progression?
Unfortunately, fallout 76 still doesn’t support cross-progression as at 2023. Cross progression, which can also be described as cross save, is that feature that allows players to transfer their saved data from one platform to the other.
For instance, a gamer that ascended to a certain level on Xbox One and wishes to continue playing on PS4 is free to cross-save, transferring their progress to the next device. Cross-progression is mainly for gamers who always change devices and want to start from exactly where they stopped with the previous device.
For a game that does not support cross-progression, starting from scratch each time you change the device can be a damper. For fans of Fallout 76, they would view the introduction of cross-progression as a game-changer.
However, it is unfortunate that for now, those that wish to switch platforms will need to create a new brand character and kick-start their journey in the wasteland from scratch.
This is surely disappointing to gamers, however, we cannot give up hope of Bethesda introducing the feature during expansions and future updates. This hope can be kept alive because the gaming company has been steadfast in expanding and improving the game from its inception.
Is Fallout 76 cross-platform on Xbox and PC?
Currently, Fallout 76 is listed as partially cross-platform as it only allows users on certain devices like Xbox and PC to join efforts and explore the post-apocalyptic world together. While it is obvious that the game has made giant strides in the area of cross-platform gaming from inception, there are still limitations regarding which platform you can connect with.
It is a known fact that the Bethesda Game Studio’s project had a shaky initial release, but the gaming company has managed to save Fallout 76, turning it into a thriving MMO on Windows PC, and Xbox.
As of the current date, Fallout 76 only supports cross-platform play between Xbox and PC. What this means is that a player on Xbox One and another using Windows PC can decide to team up and make their foray into the post-apocalyptic wasteland, the platforms they are using notwithstanding. Thus, users of Xbox One and Windows PC are at liberty to join forces and restore the world of Fallout 76 as a united community.
Though the game is also available on PS4 and Steam (PC), cross-play is only enjoyed on Windows PC and Xbox One. For the purpose of elucidation, PC and mobile devices cross-platform play is not supported. Similarly, PC and PS4/PS5 cross-platform is also not supported. Even though the game can be accessed on each of these platforms, gamers on PlayStation consoles can’t engage in PvP against PC players.
Fans are still looking forward to the time that Bethesda Game Studio would deem it necessary to expand cross-platform functionality to all the major platforms but time will tell.
Will Fallout 76 be Cross-play in the Future?
When Fallout 76 was about to be released in 2018, Bethesda Game Studio marketing and communication executive, Pete Hines, released an official word about Fallout 76 becoming cross-play in the future.
Hines revealed that the game does not support cross-play and there are several reasons for that. He went on to say that he is yet to know if Fallout 76 will ever support cross-play but it is definitely not on their radar currently. Their only focus then was launch and B.E.T.A, he said.
All this information was made known to players through tweets from the marketing boss a month before the launch and the company may still be making some internal changes post-launch. However, making Fallout 76 cross-play will largely depend on player feedback. Those that want it to happen should simply let the gaming company know.
A look ahead revealed that players now need to sign into a different Bethesda.net account at the top side of their Xbox Live or PSN credentials on consoles. What this means is that Bethesda Game Studio is already taking the lead in making Fallout 76 cross-play possible.
