Willie Nelson has been in the music game for 6 decades and counting, a fact that often makes people wonder about his age. Nelson is old but not tired. He released his 69th studio album titled Ride Me Back Home in 2019 and continues to play at shows. How Old is Willie Nelson?

Willie was born in the year 1933, precisely in on the 29th day of April, that would make him over 80 years old as of the time of this writing. He was born in the town of Abbott in Texas to parents named Myrle Marie (née Greenhaw) and Ira Doyle Nelson but would become a product of a broken home. The first to leave was his mother and later his mechanic father who left to marry another woman, leaving Nelson and his siblings which at the time included his sister Bobbie to the care of his grandparents.

Nelson would probably not have a career in music if not for his musically-inclined grandparents who bought and taught him to play his first guitar. He was just seven years old at the time. Two years later, at the age of 9, he’d developed on his skills enough to earn him a berth on a local rock band called the Bohemian Polka.

By his teens, precisely at 13 years old, Willie Nelson had started singing for money and the rest is history.

Willie Nelson has lived so long in life that his 7 kids come as no surprise. The music legend had his 7 offsprings from three women. Though he has been married to four women, his marriage to his second wife did not produce any kids.

Nelson’s first three kids – Lana, Susie, and Willie Hugh, Jr. all came from his first marriage which was to a certain Martha Matthews. Unfortunately for Nelson, the marriage was marked by domestic violence with Nelson at the receiving end, his wife would often beat him up, including a time when she reportedly sewed him in a bedsheet and beat him with a broom.

Nelson and Martha’s marriage managed to last for a decade – from 1952 to 1962. A year after his divorce from Martha, Nelson married fellow country musician, Shirley Collie, however, this time, Nelson’s infidelity saw to the end of the marriage in divorce in 1971 after eight years.

Collie had left Nelson after she discovered that he fathered a love child named Paula Carlene Nelson with a woman named Connie Koepke. Paula who was born on October 27, 1969, like her father, is also a country music singer.

Nelson’s marriage to Paula’s mother Connie would produce another child, a daughter named Amy Lee Nelson. From his next marriage which was to Annie D’Angelo, Willie Nelson has two other kids, both sons named Lukas Autry and Jacob Micah. Lukas, in 2008, followed in his father’s footsteps to become a professional musician. He has released several albums and was the co-producer of the songs in the 2018 film, A Star Is Born which starred Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

What Happened To Willie Nelson’s Son?

From the names listed above, Willie Nelson’s kids should be 8 – (3 from his marriage to Martha, 2 with Connie Koepke and 3 with current wife Annie D’Angelo). However, one of his sons, Willie Hugh, Jr. who is actually his first son is now deceased, reducing the number to 7.

Willie who was fondly called Billy was quite a troubled child. He abused drugs and alcohol for the most part of his adult life and in December of 1993, his friend walked in on his dead body, suspended on a rope he’d used to hang himself. He was 33 years old when he died.
