Following his graduation, Holt left for France to attend college but was expelled. He is fluent in the French language.

He ran away from home to Los Angeles at the age of 14 to become an actor but instead, he ended up unloading trucks in a screwdriver factory. Holt debuted with the Broadway production of Biloxi Blues. After that, he appeared in a few supporting roles in films such as Casualties of War (1989), Creepshow 2 (1987), Alien 3 (1992), The Search for One-eye Jimmy (1994), Jade (1995) and has become one of the best actors in the industry.

In 1995, he portrayed Teddy Atlas, the legendary boxing trainer in the television film Tyson which is based on the life of the American heavyweight boxer, Mike Tyson. He worked in numerous films throughout the 90s with roles in films such as Amateur (1994) as Usher, Rough Riders (1997) as Sgt Hamilton Fish, Fight Club (1999) as the mechanic, and Three Kings (1999) as captain Van Meter.

From 2000 to 2010, Holt McCallany lighted up our TV screens with his very strong on-screen presence and impressive performances. He is an amazing actor who can play different roles both in films and television shows. Some of his outstanding works include the 2002 film Below, Freedom (2000-2001), CSI: Miami (2003-2005), Monk (2004), Against the Ropes (2004), Criminal Minds (2006), Heroes (2007), Vantage Point (2008), A Perfect Gateway (2009), and The Losers (2010).

He appeared in the 2013 action crime film Gangster Squad along with Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, as Karl Lockwood. His other film credits include Bullet to the Head, Blackhat, The Perfect Guy co-starring Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut, the 2016 Clint Eastwood-directed biopic Sully – alongside Tom Hanks and Laura LinneyMonster Trucks (2016), Shot Caller (2017), and the superhero film Justice League (2017).

Additionally, McCallany was cast as Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary in the 2011 FX TV series Lights Out. He appeared in Golden Boy, Blue Blood and in 2017, he co-starred as FBI agent Bill Tench in the Netflix series Mindhunter. Holt McCallany has also worked behind the screen as a writer and producer.

As earlier mentioned, McCallany was born into a theatrical family. His mother is Julie Wilson. He was born in 1924 to a singer and actress who sang in nightclubs and was widely known as the Queen of Cabaret. She died in 2015.

His father was Michael McAloney, an actor and producer. He lived from 1924 to 2000 and is best known for his Tony Award-winning production of Brendan Behan’s Borstal Boy – the first Irish production to win top honours on Broadway.

Holt married his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Wilson in 2006. Wilson was born on June 21, 1985, to an actor father and a psychologist mother in New York City. Like her husband, she is a film, television, and theatre actress but is also an artist. Her on-screen works include All My Children, As The World Turns, Law & Order, and The Good Wife.
