Hassan Whiteside Bio, Injury and Career Stats, Age, Height

There will be just a handful of players – if any at all, in the National Basketball Association (NBA) whose career saw them start off in America, move to and fro various teams in Lebanon and China before finding their way back to the NBA and still remain at the top of their game, in the league where basketball is hottest compared to any part of the world. When such players are being sought, Hassan Whiteside comes to an honourable mention. Here is more on the biography of this baller whose resilience has kept before the eyes of American basketball fans for a long time and counting.

Hassan Whiteside Bio, Age

Hassan was raised in Gastonia, North Carolina after he was born to Hasson Arbubakrr and Debbie Whiteside on June 13, 1989, as one of six children in the family. The kid and his siblings are reported to have been raised by their mom for much of the time, though at some point, he stayed with his father.

As he came of high school age, Whiteside attended various high schools at different times, depending on where and who he was with at the time before he finally graduated from The Patterson School in Lenoir, North Carolina after having an impressive 2008/9 high school basketball season.

When Hassan Whiteside was set to enter college, various institutions like the University of North Carolina, Auburn University and some others in the region made offers to him but he chose Marshall University over the pile as he committed to play for the Marshall Thundering Herd men’s basketball team. The young baller was quick to show just how exceptionally good he was with the ball and soon began making headlines as he recorded several triple-doubles, had the most blocked shots in a single season and broke a couple of records that have been on the shelf for donkey years.

Following his superb performances in college basketball, Hassan declared for the 2010 NBA Draft after spending just a season (2009/10) in college.

Career Stats And Injury

The Sacramento Kings picked the Gastonia-born baller as the 33rd overall in the 2010 NBA Draft on June 24, 2010. A few weeks later in July, he signed his rookie contract which was worth $3.8 million with $1.76 million as guaranteed money.

However, Hassan didn’t turn out to easily find his way and solidify his place in the league as he set off on a merry-go-round in the cradle of his professional career. The center player was sent to the Reno Bighorns; an affiliate of the Kings in the D-League in November 2010 before he was recalled to the main team in January 2011.

He played just one game in his rookie season as he sustained a partially torn tendon in his left knee which he required surgery to repair and thus, missed the rest of the season. Come January 2012, he got back on his feet and was reassigned to Reno Bighorns before he was called back to the Kings in February only to be waived a few months later on July 16, 2012. By December of the same year, the Sioux Falls Skyforce which plays in the NBA G-League brought him in but soon traded him to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers which he would later win the D-League championship with.

Hassan then went overseas (beginning in May 2013 to the latter months of 2014) to play for Amchit Club in Lebanon, Sichuan Blue Whales in the Chinese NBL, Al Mouttahed Tripoli in Lebanon and Jiangsu Tongxi in the Chinese NBL before he returned to America to be signed by the Memphis Grizzlies on September 25, 2014. He was again waived and acquired by Rio Grande Valley Vipers after which he was traded to Iowa Energy and had a back and forth movement between the two teams prior to the Miami Heat coming to ask for his services.

The Gastonia, North Carolina-born player signed a two-year contract with Miami Heat on November 24, 2014, which was worth $1.7 million with an average salary of $875,615. He got off to a good start in his new team, recording one career high after another to show that his time playing overseas was never a waste. In his second season, Hassan sustained a left hip injury which caused him to miss about 6 games but this, notwithstanding, he was quick to get back to his impressive form almost instantly.

Having shown himself to be of much value, the Miami Heat re-signed Hassan Whiteside to a 4-year contract worth $98 million which placed him at an average salary of $24 million. His new contract has been running fine but for a few injuries which have succeeded in keeping the dogged baller off some games. He missed 5 games in 2017 due to a bruised knee, just as he has also missed another 9 games in 2018 for a hip injury.

He recorded all these from the 271 games he played out of which he started 206.

The basketballer towers at 7 feet 0 inches or 2.13 m. At this height, Hassan Whiteside is a monster in the paint as he has come to be a renowned shot-blocker and rebounder who is still capable of hitting jumpers less ferociously with his soft hands either in short or mid-range.
