Guerschon Yabusele did not expect that he would be selected by the Boston Celtics at the NBA draft of 2016, but to the shock of everyone, he made it as the 16th overall pick. Seen as one of the best international prospects at the time, the French basketball player whose nickname is The Dancing Bear started his career in his home country of France before he made the NBA. Here is all to know about him.
Guerschon Yabusele Bio and Age
It was on December 17, 1995, that Guerschon Yabusele was born in Dreux, France, and it was also there that he was brought up. Growing up as a kid with good height and body build, he had his eyes set on becoming a boxer for which he trained before deciding to make a career as a professional basketballer.
The most interesting thing yet about him is that boxing which was his first love was not the only sport that he grew up playing, he also played soccer as a kid. In fact, he played soccer and trained in boxing until the age of 7 when his father told him it would be good to try basketball because he believed he was going to grow very big.
For his career as a basketball player, Guerschon Yabusele began playing in his home country with the French professional basketball club, Chorale Roanne Basket from 2013 to 2015 before moving to Rouen Métropole Basket where he only spent a season. Next, he moved to play for the Shanghai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association.
His next move was to Maine Red Claws in 2016 when he started playing in the minor league basketball. It was from there that he got to make the 2016 NBA draft to play for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In his debut game on October 20, Yabusele had a great play and within the first 3 minutes, he made 3 points and a rebound.
With just a few games to his name in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, he does not have much in terms of personal achievements with the team. While playing in the Chinese Basketball Association, however, he made the CBA All-Star team in 2017.
By the end of the 2017/2018 NBA regular season, Guerschon Yabusele had played in 33 games starting in 4 games. He recorded an average of 2.4 points per game, 1.6 rebounds and 0.5 assists. In the 2017/2018 playoffs, he started 12 games, having .9 rebounds and .3 assist per game.
The Boston Celtics player spent some time in the G-League where he played for the Maine Red Claws before he joined the NBA.
While he is a great player who looks to have a very good future in the league, he had his own problems. Among the unfavourable things attached to him was a weakness in the defense. Also, he had been unable to take advantage of his quickness of feet to collect boards.
Even though there is not so much that is known about his family, it is a known fact that he was born into an immigrant family that settled in France from the Democratic Republic of Congo. His love for boxing came from his father who was a professional boxer and also served as the trainer of his son as the basketballer was growing up.
Raised alongside a brother and two sisters, there is not much that is known about his mother. More so, while he is not yet married, there is also no record of him having a girlfriend.
Height and Weight
The Dancing Bear is a basketballer who has also taken part in different sports in his life as a young boy. One of the major things that have helped him to succeed in the various sports (boxing and Soccer) as well as basketball is his height and body build. He stands at a massive height of 6 feet 7 inches (2.03 m) while having a body weight of 260 (118kg).
The main problem with most athletes who have a huge body build is that they are not the most mobile that you would get on any pitch or court. Nevertheless, the case is different with Yabusele who is big but still very mobile while playing ball.
