7 Things You Didn’t Know About Gossip Girl And Its Cast Members

The American teen drama TV series titled Gossip Girl was centered around the events in the lives of privileged teens who lived in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. In lead roles were the likes of Blake Lively as Serena van der Woodsen, Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf, the Queen Bee, Kelly Rutherford as Lily van der Woodsen, Penn Badgley as Daniel “Dan” Humphrey, Chace Crawford as Nathaniel “Nate” Archibald and a host of other stars. As the teens went about living their lives, they couldn’t hide any secret from a ruthless omniscient blogger voiced by Kristen Bell who narrated the series.

The television series was created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage as an adaptation of Cecily von Ziegesar’s book of the same name, while Mark Piznarski directed it. Gossip Girl began airing on The CW from September 19th, 2007 and had a successful 6 seasons run till its last episode aired on December 17, 2012. 1. Constance Billard School for Girls Is Fictional

One of the most interesting facts about Gossip Girl which a lot of people don’t know is that Constance Billard School for Girls does not exist in real life. Producers of the American teen drama television series did a good job of modifying the exterior of The New York City Museum as the school’s exterior. They then used post-production professional touches to blur out anything that would have identified the building as a museum.

2. The Empire Hotel’s Appeal

Many times, the scenes where a movie or TV series gets shot turn out to become a new tourist attraction to fans or followers of the show. As it pertains to Gossip Girl, many scenes of the series were filmed in The Empire Hotel (located in the New York City borough of Manhattan) which was portrayed as being owned by Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) in the series.

As the show attracted a considerably large number of fans, so the hotel witnessed an increased number of guests wanting to stay there. To cash in on this, the hotel management created a unique series of Gossip Girl cocktails one of which is XOXO whose ingredient is only known to the hotel management.

One of the most romantic facts about Gossip Girl is the real-life romance that kicked off between Blake Lively and Penn Badgley (Serena and Dan). However, after a 30-month romance, the two decided to call it quits in 2010 but still maintained their roles as a couple in Gossip Girl. As they went on with their lives separately, Blake got married to Ryan Reynolds while Penn Badgely got married to Domino Kirke.

4. A Strike Helped the Show Gain Popularity

After Gossip Girl began airing, the 2007 to 2008 strike of the Writers Guild of America which lasted from November 5, 2007, to February 12, 2008, and involved all the 12,000 American labor union film and television screenwriters. While the strike was going on, Gossip Girl was all The CW had on as they couldn’t run repeats or game shows, they kept on airing the show during the strike and more and more people kept watching it. This made the show have higher ratings when it returned for its second season.

5. Many New York City Schools Banned the Show

As Gossip Girl gained traction with viewers, some New York City elite schools who felt they shared similarities with the show’s fictional Constance Billard and St. Jude’s school banned their students from watching the show. But as you will expect, they only succeeded at indirectly piquing the curiosity of their students about the show which led many to watch it and furthermore bring it into mainstream TV show discussions.

6. Gossip Girl Inspired Many Fashion Trends

With an appreciating number of fan following, good rating on various film review sites and with one thing or the other always being discussed about the series in one blog or forum, Gossip Girl had a firm grip on most people at the time. In the year 2012, the then Mayor of New York City – Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared the 26th of January as “Gossip Girl Day.” He did this in celebration of the show’s 100th episode. A celebration of the event was held at the New York City studio where the show was being filmed.
