A list of the most prominent fashion models of the 2010s would not be complete without the inclusion of Gigi Hadid, the 2016 British Fashion Council International Model of the Year. The Los Angeles native, who is signed to the world-renowned IMG Models agency, is a natural at what she does unlike others in the business who were discovered at a later age. This is because Hadid began modeling from the time she was a toddler. She has since gone on to rank among the highest-paid supermodels in the world, making appearances on the covers of numerous magazines and walking the runway for some of the most high profile designers in the world.
How Gigi Hadid Began Modeling?
As a two-year-old, Gigi Hadid began modeling for Baby Guess after she was discovered by fashion designer and co-founder of Guess clothing, Paul Marciano. It is not clear how long she modeled for the company before she stopped to concentrate on getting an education.
The young girl went on to attend Malibu High School where she participated in a couple of sporting activities. Hadid was a competitive horseback rider and was also the captain of the school’s volleyball team. After graduating in 2013, she enrolled at The New School in New York to study criminal psychology as she also looked to take her modeling career to the next level.
Two years before leaving high school, however, Hadid had returned to work with Marciano and Guess and was named the face of their 2012 campaign. Her desire to combine her education and work as a model did not pan out as she imagined and so she had to suspend her college studies in order to concentrate on her career.
Highlights of Her Modeling Career
After making the decision to concentrate on her modeling career, Gigi Hadid signed to IMG Models in 2013. Things immediately began to move very fast for her as she got to make her debut at New York Fashion Week in early 2014 and appear on the covers of Galore and CR Fashion Book magazines. Before the year ran out, she co-hosted The Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards event and starred in various campaigns for Tom Ford.
In her second year as a professional model, Gigi was named The Daily Front Row Model of the Year. She was also named the brand ambassador for the Australian fashion swimwear label, Seafolly, and the brand ambassador for cosmetics, skin, and personal care company, Maybelline.
Some of the magazines she covered that year include various international editions of Vogue, Teen Vogue, Numero, W Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, and Allure among many others. She further walked for designers like Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Michael Kors, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Max Mara before making her first appearance in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in December 2015.
In 2016, the year she won the award for International Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards and earned her wings at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Gigi Hadid became the global brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger and a brand ambassador for Reebok. She further got to co-design a capsule collection with Tommy Hilfiger called Gigi by Tommy Hilfiger as well as a boot collection for Stuart Weitzman called Gigi Boot.
