Growing up, he was involved in diverse sporting activities including hockey, skating and karate. At age 16, he took up other combat sports including wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing. He equally had to do several odd jobs to support himself before he eventually became a professional mixed martial artist at age 21.
St-Pierre is known to have turned pro in 2002, however, his earlier years were poorly documented. He marked his UFC debut in January 2004 at the UFC 46 event in which he defeated top-ranked MMA star Karo Parisyan. After recording a second victory at UFC 48, St-Pierre got his first shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship when he faced Matt Hughes at UFC 50 in October 2004. However, he was defeated by Hughes via armbar submission which marked his first loss in the UFC. St-Pierre swiftly returned to his winning ways as he recorded 4 straight wins in his subsequent bouts.
The budding artist got another shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship at the UFC 63 event held in September 2006. Sadly, he was unable to feature in the match owing to a groin injury and thus he was replaced by B.J. Penn. The following month, he got a third shot at the title when he faced Matt Hughes at the UFC 65 event. St-Pierre won the fight in the second round via technical knockout which marked the beginning of his first stint as the UFC Welterweight Champion. His reign came to an end when he lost the title to Matt Serra in April 2007 at the UFC 69 event.
In April 2008, Georges St-Pierre was able to reclaim the Welterweight title at the UFC 83 event held in Québec, Canada. This marked the beginning of his record 2,064-day reign as the UFC Welterweight champion. He successfully defended the title 9 times between 2008 and 2013. He ultimately vacated the title in December 2013 when he temporarily retired from professional mixed martial arts.
After a long hiatus, Georges St-Pierre re-signed with the UFC in February 2017 and this time, he opted to compete in the Middleweight Division. In his first match after returning to the UFC, St-Pierre was pitched opposite then-Middleweight champion Michael Bisping at the UFC 217 event held on November 4, 2017. He defeated Bisping in the third round via technical submission to become the new UFC Middleweight Champion. He also became the 4th MMA star to be crowned champion in multiple weight divisions in the history of the UFC. However, his reign as UFC Middleweight Champion was rather shortlived. St-Pierre vacated the Middleweight title on December 7, 2017, after he got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
Since joining the UFC in early 2004, Georges St Pierre has worked his way through the ranks to become one of the most commercially successful mixed martial artists of his generation. The UFC star has also attracted numerous lucrative endorsements in addition to other bankable ventures. It comes as no surprise that the MMA star has built a vast fortune for himself over the years. His net worth is pegged at a whopping $30 million.
