Fred Couples Married, Wife, Girlfriend, Daughter, Net Worth, House

There is hardly any lover of golf that needs to ask who Fred Couples is. This American golfer has been around the game in a professional capacity since 1980. He has also racked up more than enough wins to stay relevant and in contention of many trophies and titles.

Speaking of trophies, the Seattle born golfer won the 1992 Mater Tournament and the Players Championship in 1984 and 1996. His first senior major came at the Senior Players Championship in August 2011. He has won over 62 tournaments in his illustrious career, a record that earned him an induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.

Fred Couples Biography

Fred Couples was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 3, 1959. Thanks to his parent’s heritage, he is of mixed ethnicity; his father, Tom Couples (formerly Coppola) is Italian, and his mother, Violet Couples is of Croatian descent. Fred and his two siblings, Tom Jr. and Cindy grew up on Beacon Hill, which happened to be close to the city’s Jefferson Park golf course.

And so, Fred’s love for the sport was born. It was at this park that Fred, who is also affectionately referred to as Boom Boom, developed his signature swing. It was initially as a way to keep pace with the older kids.

Couples attended O’Dea High School in his hometown of Seattle. By the time he graduated in 1977, he had gotten pretty good at the sport and this earned him a golf scholarship to attend the University of Houston. Here, he played for the Houston Cougar’s men’s golf team. While still in college, at the age of 19, Fred, still an amateur player at the time, defeated seasoned PGA Tour veteran, Don Bies in a playoff game, clinching the 1978 Washington Open.

The Beginning of His Professional Career

It took three years after going pro for Couples to earn his first PGA Tour victory. This came in form of the 1983 Kemper Open. He scored a birdie in the playoffs to win the title after being tied for first with Scott Simpson and Chen Tzechung in regulation play. This opened up the floodgates for the golfer as he went on to win fourteen more PGA tour titles.

His talent continued to earn him more accolades, including two PGA Tour Player of the Year titles in 1991 and 1992. In these years he also had the lowest scoring average, a record that also bagged him the Vardon trophy. He is a five-time member of the United States Ryder Cup team, with his first naming in 1989, and the last in 1997.

The golfer also has another record to his name. In 1992, he became the first professional golfer from his country to climb to the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. His red-hot start at the start of that PGA Tour kept him at the top spot for 16 straight weeks.

Fred Couples continued to rake in the tour earnings and titles. Throughout his career, he has proved his mettle most at the Skins Games and the Johnnie Walker World Golf Championships. Couples has continued to maintain a stellar career, even in the light of back injuries that have threatened to derail his career.

Despite his impressive playing, Fred dialled back his playing schedule due to health problems in 2007 – a trend that continued into the next two years. In 2009, he was named as the US Captain for the Presidents Cup. He rewarded the honour by leading them to a crucial victory.

Couples nearly won his first career event at the PGA Tour Champions in 2010. Despite a splendid record, he came second to Tom Watson. However, he would go on to win his next three starts, becoming the first player in the history of the Champions Tour to win three of his first four career events.

The man continued to record splendid performances, coming in second at the 2010 Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open. The year ended with him winning the Champions Tour Rookie of the Year award.

Back injuries struck again in 2011, keeping him out for most of the season. Nonetheless, he would come back after a surgery to clinch the Senior Players Championship, his first major tournament on the senior circuit. Couples extended that record when he won the Senior Open Championship the following year. In 2016, Couples persistent back problems would force him to not participate in the Masters Tournament for the first time since 1994.

Girlfriend or Wife, Is Fred Married? – His Daughter

Fred has been married twice. His first marriage was to a woman named Deborah who he met at the University of Houston. Their marriage lasted from 1981 to 1993. She would later fall to her death in 2001. It was ruled as a suicide.

Couples married Thais Baker in 1998 but she died of breast cancer on February 17, 2009. Sadly for Fred, he had no biological children with either of his wives. However, he has two stepchildren from Thais’ previous marriage. The two kids, Gigi and Oliver, were 18 and 16 respectively as at the time of their mother’s death.

Fred Couples’ House and Net Worth

In 2015, Couples moved to Newport Beach, California. He bought a classy 1971 mansion for a reported fee of $3.4 million. The house boasts a huge 1000-foot garage, a kitchen worthy of a chef, a wrap around oversized island, a media room and four-bed rooms. After several attempts to sell the house, he finally got a buyer for it in 2017. Former NBA legend, Jerry “The Logo” West took the property off his hands for an unreported fee believed to be in the region of $4.5 – $5 million.

Fred has had a long and profitable career. Since he turned pro, he has never ended a season with playing revenue of less than $1 million dollars. Put his titles, playing revenue, endorsement deals and everything else together, and it is not hard to understand his massive net worth. His wealth is valued at $120 million.
