The super talented actress was born as Cynthia Ann Smith in Gibson City, Illinois, in the United States on June 23, 1957. When she was a year and a half, she was adopted by a couple from Canada named Noreen E. and Vernon McDormand.

Noreen worked as a registered nurse as well as a receptionist and her husband Vernon McDormand is a pastor at Disciples of Christ Church. Due to their childless marriage, the couple decided to adopt Frances and her sister Dorothy. Dorothy is an ordained minister at the Disciples of Christ Church while Frances pursued a career in acting.

While she was growing up, Frances went to Monessen High School and graduated in 1975. After her graduation, she enrolled at Bethany College in West Virginia where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre in 1979. Frances also attended Yale School of Drama where she obtained a Masters degree in Fine Arts.


After her graduation, Frances McDormand, along with her friend Holly Hunter, moved to New York where she started her professional acting career. Holly introduced her to the Coen brothers named Ethan Coen and Joe Coen to whom she later got married to. Frances started working with the brothers when she first starred in Derek Walcott’s play titled Trinidad and Tobago in 1982. Later on, she made her first film appearance in 1984 when she starred in a film titled Blood Sample, the film was directed and produced by the Coen brothers.

Since the inception of her acting career, Frances McDormand has always appeared in several movies produced by the Coen brothers including a comedy titled Raising Arizona where she starred alongside Nicolas Cage. Frances started gaining fame when she was nominated for the best-supporting-actress following her brilliant role in a civil rights drama titled Mississippi Burning in 1998. Later on, in the same year, she also earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in Broadway drama titled Desire.
