The NHL has been graced by many famous athletes down the years and that trait of excellence has continued into the present generation of hockey players. Coming from all over the globe, we have athletes that one could say were just born to play the sport. Evgeni Malkin, a professional ice hockey center and the alternate captain of the Penguins is one such player.
Brief Bio – Evgeni Malkin
Evgeni Malkin was born on July 31, 1986, in Magnitogorsk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. His birth name is quite lengthy though, it reads Evgeni (Yevgeni) Vladimirovich Malkin. His mother is Natalia Malkin and his father is Vladimir Malkin. His father had played in the youth and club hockey system of Metallurg Magnitogorsk, so when his young son began to show a keen interest in the sport, it felt only natural that he get the backing of his father to go professional. Malkin began to skate when he was only three years old, joining his first organized hockey league at the age of five.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Malkin’s hometown club formed the base for Evgeni Malkin to go on and become a hockey player. He made his Russian Superleague debut when he was just 17 years old in the 2003/04 season. He brought pride to the motherland when he represented Russia for the first time at the 2003 U-18 World Championships as the team went on to claim the bronze medal. His time with Metallurg Magnitogorsk looked to be coming to an end after his first professional season as he was drafted in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The transfer, however, hit a snag as a dispute between the NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation meant the transfer had to be delayed. Malkin’s relationship with Metallurg Magnitogorsk was strained, to say the least, and two years later on September 5, 2006, he signed an entry-level contract with the Penguins. The path that brought Malkin to the Penguins was quite complicated and his old team even had to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NHL and the Penguins. The case was dismissed, however, on grounds that it lacked merit.
When the dust had settled from the transfer saga, Malkin began to do what he knew best. The young man was so good he set a modern NHL record in his first six games, scoring in each game. By the end of his first year, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. He has enjoyed both personal successes as well as team success throughout his years with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Some of the honors and awards he got while with the Penguins include winning the Stanley Cup three times – 2009, 2016 and 2017. Conn Smythe Trophy in 2009, Hart Memorial Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award both in 2012, NHL First All-Star Team in 2008, 2009 and 2012, NHL All-Star Game in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017.
Malkin has competed at the top of the hockey sport. He has competed in two IIHF World U18 Championships and three IIHF World U20 Championships. He has won one gold, two silvers, and one bronze medal. Malkin’s annual salary for Pittsburgh Penguins is estimated to be at $8.7 million. His net worth is estimated at around $25 million.
