It’s not often that we find celebrities who still take school seriously after making it big, and it’s quite logical why they would drop out. Going to school these days is not just about learning new stuff, it’s also about learning in order to be employed in the future and we can all agree that those in showbiz are luxuriously employed. Before we take a closer look at Emma Watson’s education, here are a few other celebrities that also pursued their education.

You may not know this but quite a handful of celebrities out there are also skilled intellectuals, check a few of them out.

  • Mayim Bialik, the delightful lady who plays Amy in the Big Bang Theory, is not only an on screen intellectual, She attended UCLA and completed a triple major! Imagine that, her three majors were in Hebrew, Jewish Studies and neuroscience. She later pursued a Ph.D in neuroscience.
  • Shaquille O’Neal is not only skilled with the hoops, apparently he’s also skilled in a classroom. In 2012, he earned an Ed.D in education from Barry University.

  • You may not know this, but this funny man Ken Jeong, actually received his MD in 1995 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His passion for acting won him over to the other side.
  • She’s not just a pretty face, Natalie Portman has graduated from Harvard with a degree in psychology.

The star has attended quite a few schools in her day, even her hectic schedule during the filming of Harry Potter could not stop this young lady from getting an education.

So here are five interesting and insightful facts about Emma Watson’s education.


Emma had a little background prep for her part in Harry Potter      

Her love for acting dates further back than the first time we saw her grace our screens as Hermione Granger, Emma took a few acting classes at the Stagecoach Theatre Arts, while going through the regular schooling process of course. By the time the actress was 10 years old, she had taken part and performed in a number of plays and productions.

The whole experience prepared her for her audition for her role in Harry Potter where she auditioned eight times for the part, little did she know that she had won over J.K Rowling from the very start.

She attended Dragon School, Oxford up until 2003

Juggling school and a full time acting job is no easy feat, but Miss Watson aced it. While she was filming, she attended Dragon school, an independent school in Oxford till, June 2003. She got her start on acting in Dragon school by performing in a number of stage plays and she also got some of the expertise she used to win J.K Rowling over.

Apparently, she left the school  as a result of her busy filming schedules, to an exclusive £30,000-a-year Headington School, in Oxford. Of course, since she was almost always filming, she was not a very steady student.

There was a strict ban on talking to the star while she was at Headington School

We don’t know how it works out for famous students in other schools, but at Headingtons there was a strict ban on talking to Emma, asking for her autograph or bringing up any conversations about Harry Potter. While most of them were aware of who she was, they were not allowed to bother her unless they were already friends.

Doing this could earn them penalty points that would later translate to detention, though the students mostly adhered to the instructions a few of them chanced a meeting with Miss Watson. The school on the other hand denied all claims by simply stating, ‘ ‘There were no special disciplinary measures implemented during Emma’s time at Headington School.’

While on set, Emma tutored non-stop 

Being out of school was no excuse for the star to lag behind on school work, during filming, the star was tutored for as long as 5 hours a day. It must have been a grueling process indeed, but it paid off in the long run. In June 2006, when she took her General Certificate of Secondary Education exams (GCSE), she earned 8 A+’s and 2 A’s.

It just goes to show that you can achieve anything as long as you push yourself.

The star attended and successfully graduated from college

During her ‘gap year’ at home after high school, there were many speculations as to which college the star would be attending. In September 2009, she finally confirmed that she would be attending Brown University. While the star was at Brown, she also studied at England’s Oxford University and even took a year off in 2011 to pursue her career.

In the period of 5 years, the star completed her education and walked away with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. Most people must be wondering why she takes school so seriously, well the answer is simple and it was best said by Emma herself, ‘ People can’t understand why I don’t want to pursue a full time acting career, but school life keeps me in touch with my friends. It keeps me in touch with reality.’
