Eddie Irvine Biography
It was to Edmund Sr. and Kathleen that Eddie was born as Edmund Irvine Jr. on 10 November 1965 in Northern Ireland, Newtownards, County Down. He was brought up together with his sister Sonia in the village of Conlig. Sonia would later serve as his physiotherapist until 1999.
Thanks to the love of his family for car racing and the fact that his father also raced in single-seaters although, for fun, Irvine came in contact with the sport as a little kid and fell in love with it. He had what is now known as his first experience with motorsport during a holiday with his family when they attended the British Grand Prix.
For his education, Eddie went to Regent House Grammar School and in 1983, he began his career as a race driver. At first, his main interest was in motorcycle racing but because his parents thought that was too dangerous, he settled for cars. During the early years, he got his father to fund his racing while in return, he worked in his scrapyard unpaid.
Thanks to the success he achieved from the Formula Ford Championship that he entered, he was able to make it to the Formula One in 1993 when he joined the Jordan team. Making his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix, Irvine made an immediate reputation for himself following an incident involving Ayrton Senna. The incident occurred after the Irishman unlapped himself twice against Senna which would see Senna punch him after a heated argument after the race.
In 1994, he would get into another trouble following his involvement in a four-car crash that had him suspended for three games and fined $10,000. He continued racing for the team until 1996 when he moved to Ferrari on a contract to be paired with Michael Schumacher. When Schumacher broke his leg in 1999 at the British Grand Prix, the Irish man took up the challenge of becoming the team leader and he almost won the championship which he ended in the second place.
His next movement was to Jaguar in 2000 and he remained there until 2002 at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Looking at his career as a whole, while he is not the greatest in the sport or even in his time, he has managed to have his own place with 4 career wins in the Formula One and 191 career points.
