When Frank Herbert published Dune in 1965, he certainly must have hoped it would be successful, and it actually turned out to be. The best-selling novel has sold about 20 million copies worldwide and there have been more than one attempt to adapt it to screen but the results were not wonderful. Consequently, Legendary Entertainment decided to try its hands at adapting the novel and in 2016, the company obtained rights to the science-fiction novel from author Frank Herbert’s estate. Not long after, it was confirmed that award-winning director Denis Villeneuve will be bringing his talent to bear on the new Dune movie.
Read on to learn more about the latest adaptation of the classic story which is scheduled to hit the cinema in December 2020.
Is There Going To Be A Dune Movie Remake Or A Sequel?
Before now, there have been different attempts at making something out of the Frank Herbert novel, albeit not as successful as director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation is projected to be. According to a 2013 documentary titled, Jodorowsky’s Dune, filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted to create a Dune movie in the 1970s but failed. Afterward, David Lynch came up with his own film adaptation of the book in 1984 and this went from being a box office bomb to achieving the status of a cult movie.
In the year 2000, director John Harrison turned the novel into a three-part miniseries, but just like the one before it, it left viewers yearning for something better, which is what Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation promises. Thus, the most recent adaptation of Frank Herbert’s timeless novel, Dune, is going to be a remake and not a sequel to the 1984 variation by David Lynch.
Fans of Dune can almost certainly expect at least one sequel to the upcoming film as insinuated in March 2018 by Villeneuve, who revealed that the goal was to make the movie into a two-part film to preserve the original content and not cut it into too many pieces. This was confirmed by the son of the Author, Brian Herbert, who disclosed that the screenplay of the upcoming first part of the Dune movie barely covers half of the
book. Joshua Grode, CEO of Legendary Pictures, also affirmed their plans to make a sequel during an interview in April because, according to him, there is a reasonable place to stop the film mid-way before the book is over.
So, except in the highly unlikely event of this movie being a flop, the team seems pretty determined to make a sequel. Picking up from wherever this remake ends, the sequel would cover the second half of the novel. Some of Denis Villeneuve’s most notable works as a director include Prisoners (2013), Sicario (2015), 2016 sci-fi flick Arrival, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and also the 2017 widely acclaimed Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Given his track record, Villeneuve’s Dune is definitely a movie to look forward to.
When Is The Next Dune Film Coming Out?
Denis Villeneuve’s movie adaptation of the novel, which was originally supposed to hit the screens in November 2020, will now be released on December 18, 2020. Along with the news of the new release date, which was announced in August by Warner Bros, the company also said the film would be available in IMAX and 3D.
Shot on a location in Budapest, Hungary, and Jordan, Dume movie filming started in March and was concluded in July 2019. The anticipated film is set in a distant future universe and its main focus is on the noble family of Duke Leto Atreides, particularly, his son Paul Atreides. The family is granted ownership of a highly valuable but dangerous desert planet known as Arrakis, which happens to be the only source of the most treasured resource of the time, Melange – a drug simply referred to as The Spice. A ghastly betrayal would eventually lead Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica to seek refuge with the Fremen, a nomadic tribe who live deep within the Arrakis desert.
The Dune movie stars prominent Hollywood celebrities, including but not limited to Timothée Chalamet as the lead character, Paul Atreides; Rebecca Ferguson as Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica; Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides; and Jason Momoa as Swordmaster Duncan Idaho. Josh Brolin, popularly known as Thanos, will also be playing the role of Gurney Halleck while American actress and singer, Zendaya will appear as Chani. Other members of the cast of the soon-to-be-released Dune movie include Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Javier Bardem, and Chang Chen.
The film was produced by Legendary Pictures Production Company and will be distributed by Warner Bros. The screenplay was written by Denis Villeneuve, along with American screenwriters, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts. The producers are Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Joe Caracciolo Jr., and Denis Villeneuve while the executive producers include Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, Kim Herbert, and Brian Herbert.
