Dr. Phil Bio
Phillip Calvin McGraw widely known as Dr. Phil was born on September 1, 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma in the United States. His parents are Joseph J. “Joe” McGraw Jr. and Anne Geraldine Stevens. He is the third child out of four children, the others being girls. His sisters’ names are Deana, Donna, and Brenda McGraw. His father supplied oil drilling equipment and so Dr. Phil and his three sisters were raised in the oilfields of North Texas. His high school education was at the Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, Kansas from where he went on to attend the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma on a scholarship.
In college, he was interested in football and played as a middle linebacker. His time in the college football team will be remembered for the record-setting 100–6 drubbing at the hands of the football team from the University of Houston. He would later transfer to Midwestern State University, Texas to complete his college education. He graduated with a bachelors’ degree in psychology in 1975 but he was not done. He proceeded to get his masters in experimental psychology the following year and in 1979, he obtained his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas.
Career In Psychology, Television
After bagging a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Phil, like everyone would expect, began to practice, but he did not make a headway so he decided to branch out a little. He began helping trial lawyers building their cases based on the subject of investigation. He would, through the behavioral patterns of the accused, suspects, or even the plaintiffs determine the best line of defenses or prosecuting argument to put up. In 1989, the company, Courtroom Sciences Incorporated (CSI) was created, of which he was co-founder alongside Gary Dobbs, who was a lawyer. The firm handled cases from top global companies, helping them recover debts and win lawsuits which involved multi-millions. Needless to say at this point, the company was hugely profitable for everyone involved and in 2006, Dr. Phil retired his license to practice.
He devoted his time to CSI and that decision was turning point as it was through his business in CSI that he met Oprah Winfrey and helped her win a case against cattlemen in the Amarillo Texas beef trial which began in 1995 and ended in 1998. After she got her victory in the lawsuit, she decided to host Dr. Phil on one of her shows as a way of saying thank you.
That was the beginning of Dr. Phil McGraw’s journey as a television personality as he became a regular face on The Oprah Winfrey Show every Tuesday. In September 2002, he started his own daily TV talk-show “Dr. Phil” which got the highest ratings since Oprah began in 1986.
His show, Dr. Phil which is aired in the United States on a daily basis has an average daily audience of 6 million people while his website averages about 14 million views every month. He is also an author of several books including Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out (2001).
Family – Son, Wife, Divorce
Dr. Phil has been married twice. His first marriage was to Debbie Higgins McCall. Their wedding was in 1970 and Dr. Phil, who was not yet a doctor at the time was just 20 years old. However, though the love was young, the marriage never lasted, as three years later, they were in the courts for a divorce. The union did not produce any offspring and Debbie claimed Dr. Phil was domineering and asked her to do certain things she was not comfortable with. His second marriage was to Robin Jo Jameson in 1976. The couple celebrated their 40th anniversary with Dr. Phil giving his wife a surprise on one of his shows. The couple has two sons together. Jay McGraw who was born on September 12, 1979, and second son, Jordan McGraw, born in 1986.
Jay is an author, just like his father and writes self-help books for teenagers. He is also a TV executive and producer. Jay McGraw is married to former Playboy Playmate, Erica Dahm and they had their wedding ceremony at his father’s Beverly Hills home on August 12, 2006. The couple has two kids now – London Phillip and Avery Elizabeth McGraw. Jordan, on the other hand, is a musician and guitarist for the American band, Hundred Handed (he formerly played for Stars in Stereo between 2011-2015).
