Dez Bryant is a three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons before becoming a free agent in 2018. The 2014 NFL receiving touchdowns leader is revered for his exceptional talent although he has quite been unable to deliver the goods for his team over the years.
Dez Bryant was born Desmond Demond Bryant on the 4th of November, 1988 in Galveston County, Texas to a fifteen-year-old mother, Angela Bryant, and father, MacArthur Hatton. He was however raised in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas, where he attended Lufkin High School and played for their Panthers football team, earning Parade and SuperPrep All-American mentions.
Bryant had offers from numerous college programs but chose to attend Oklahoma State University where he played for coach Mike Gundy. He set the school record for receiving yards in a game by a freshman as he finished his first season with 43 receptions for 622 yards and 6 touchdowns. His second collegiate season showed massive improvement as he put in remarkable performances in big times, finishing the year with 87 receptions for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns.
By 2009, his junior year, Dez Bryant was considered the best college wide receiver. He was pinpointed as the possible winner of the Heisman Trophy that year but that prediction did not come through as Bryant was suspended for the season for violating an NCAA bylaw. After that season, Dez Bryant decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2010 NFL Draft where he was selected with the 24th overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys.
In his rookie season, Dez Bryant managed 5 receptions for 561 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns and was named to the 2010 NFL All-Rookie Team despite missing a number of games due to injury. The second season was business as usual as he finished it with 63 receptions for 928 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Overall, as of the time of writing, Bryant has in his 7-year long career managed a total of 531 receptions for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns.
Injury Stats and Update
Despite all that he has been able to achieve, you can’t help but imagine the kind if success Dez Bryant and the Cowboys might have enjoyed if he didn’t suffer all those pesky injuries.
Bryant’s injuries troubles started in his rookie season, on the 5th of December 2010 to be exact, when he suffered a fracture to his right fibula and had to miss the remaining 5 games of the season. Between 2010 and 2015, Bryant did not suffer any notable injury that required him to sit out a game as he played with a foot sprain, broken index finger, back injury, and a bruised hip, among other injuries, although one could argue that his performance might have been better if he was 100 percent fit at those times.
On September 13, 2015, Bryant fractured the 5th metatarsal in his right foot which required surgery and kept him out for 5 games. After seemingly recovering, he aggravated the injury a few months later and required a second surgery, as well as another one on his right ankle. His next injury was a hairline fracture in his knee in September 2016 which kept him on the sidelines for a few weeks.
Dez Bryant Net Worth
Dez Bryant reportedly has a net worth estimated to be in the region of $32 million. The elite wide receiver, who ranks highest among non-quarterbacks and fifth in the league for merchandise sales, has amassed his wealth through the latest mouthwatering contract he signed with the Cowboys as well through sponsorship deals.
In 2015, Bryant put pen to paper on a five-year contract worth $70 million, of which $45 million was guaranteed. It also came along with a signing bonus of $20 million. On the sponsorship and endorsement end, Bryant has lucrative deals with companies like BodyArmor, Panini, and the Nike Jordan brand. The BodyArmor deal is, however, a standout among the others as the sports drink company made Bryant a shareholder in the company which will further shoot up his net worth as the company continues to grow.
