Dawn Wells is a former beauty queen and American sweetheart, popular for the show that made her famous, Gilligan’s Island. Wells was the focus of a lot of the male folk when the series began to air in the early ’60s. It was claimed that Wells received as many as 3,000 to 5,000 fan mail a week, mostly from men.

Who is Dawn Wells?

Dawn Wells was born the 18th of October, 1938 in the ‘Wild West’, specifically Reno, Nevada. She was born to her parents, Betty and Joe Wells. At the point when high school was necessary, Dawn attended the Reno High School. She went on to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where she majored in Chemistry, she later transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle. Dawn would graduate with a degree in Theater arts and design in 1960.

A year prior to her graduation, her stunning physical features and intellect helped her to the crown of Miss Nevada and the following year, she went on to represent the state at the Miss America pageant of 1960 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

She would soon head off to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting and that journey began with a debut on The Roaring ’20s, a show by ABC. She also appeared on The New Interns. Wells was cast in episodes of various other television series including The Cheyenne Show, Bonanza, 77 Sunset Strip, and Maverick. Wells then landed her most prestigious role as Mary Ann on the television series, Gilligan’s Island.

She has also gone on to reprise the character in various reunion specials for the series including three movies and a cartoon spin-off. Wells had starred alongside Michael Dante in the independent film, Winterhawk in 1975. Other films in which she has appeared include Forever for Now, Super Sucker, The Town That Dreaded Sundown amongst others. In 2011, she was part of the film Silent But Deadly.

Wells also carved out a career in theater after she left the set of her most famous work on Gilligan’s Island. She was able to appear in nearly one hundred theatrical dramas over the years. The ’70s and ’80s were spent devoted to theater. In the years that followed, Wells has published Mary Ann’s Gilligan’s Island Cookbook in 1993. She also released in 2014 What Would Mary Ann Do? A Guide to Life, a book she co-wrote with Steve Stinson. Its release coincided with Gilligan’s Island’s 50th anniversary.

Wells has been able to maintain a close friendship with fellow stars from Gilligan’s Island including Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr. and even joined the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz in Los Angeles for the celebration of a Hollywood Walk of Fame entry for Schwartz in 2008. Dawn Wells and Tina Louise are the only surviving cast members of the famous sitcom.
