It was as Clinton Drew Dempsey that the soccer player was born on March 9, 1983, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Growing up in an athletic family with a sister, Jennifer Dempsey, who played tennis, Clint began playing football since he was a little child. He was raised in the backyard of his grandparents’ house in a trailer alongside his four siblings.
Since his early days, he played soccer with his elder brother, Ryan Dempsey, and by the time he was 10, his talent was already obvious that his family decided to try him with a youth club which immediately accepted him. Each week, he had to embark on a 6-hour trip with his father in order to be able to train. To get the money for gas, his father, a carpenter, had to sell his boat.
When he was 12, he pulled out from football because the family had to sponsor his sister who was exceptional in tennis. Unfortunately, the family was hit by a major tragedy when his sister who was only 16 at the time, died from a brain aneurysm. This would not only get him to resume playing football but he became more determined than ever in memory of his sister.
After he was through with his youth career at Dallas Texans, he went on to play soccer for the Furman Paladins men’s soccer when he was a student at the Furman University. He played from 2001 to 2003 and then got signed to the New England Revolution of the MLS from 2004 to 2006, recording 25 goals in 71 appearances.
He moved to England to play in the Premier League for Fulham from 2007 to 2012 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and remained there until 2013 when he signed for Seattle Sounders FC with which he played until his retirement in 2018.
Looking at his club career, Clint Dempsey has recorded some personal achievements. With clubs, he emerged a runner-up in the MLS Cup in 2005, 2005, and 2017, while also emerging as UEFA Europa League runner-up in 2010.
In 2002, he got the call to play for the United States’ Under-20 men’s national soccer team. 13 games later and a goal in the bag, he was invited to play for The Yanks in 2004. He kept playing until 2017 when he retired with 57 goals from 141 caps.
