She earned a bachelor of arts degree in Communications from Texas. In school, she volunteered to work for a religious aid association called Camp Life which is focused on missions to Africa. She has utilized her husband’s fame with the MLB to pursue her passion for underprivileged kids. “My hope is that we (she and Clayton) can combine our two passions and utilize these opportunities to make a difference.” Together with her husband, she co-founded a charity called the Kershaw’s Challenge which is focused on giving assistance to at-risk children in Africa. The couple have also co-authored a book titled Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself, where they talk about their humanitarian efforts and Christian faith.

Clayton Met His Wife Ellen In High School

Teenage love, they say, never dies, and this statement holds true for Clayton and his wife Ellen, who met in high school when they were in their teens. Both born and raised in Dallas, they were both freshmen at their high school, Highland Park High School. Clayton was 14 years old, while Ellen was 15. Ellen, in an interview on the Dan Patrick Show, described Clayton as the class clown and said that he was a lot shorter and very chubby than when he became popular.

A lot of romance goes down at high school hallways and Clayton and Ellen know a thing or two about this. They were both in their school’s hallway when Clayton asked Ellen out on their first date. The couple were schoolmates with the likes of Jordan Walden and Shawn Tolleson who went ahead to play in the Major League Baseball with Kershaw, as well as the NFL’s quarterback, Matthew Stafford.

A lot of high school relationships suffer after high school graduation due to the problem of distance that arises with attending different colleges, this was one of the problems that Clayton and his girlfriend faced back in the day. However, in their case, it was not different colleges that would threaten to separate them but Clayton’s football career.

He had turned down the scholarship offer to play collegiate baseball at Texas A&M University where Ellen had chosen to school. She had perhaps made Texas her choice in order to stay with Clayton but their plan fell through when Clayton received a mouth-watering offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal came with a signing bonus of $2.3 million, the highest ever given to a Dodgers pick at the time. Clayton chose to take the offer which meant he had to be miles away from Ellen who got accepted to Texas.

In the couple’s interview with Risen Magazine, they revealed how that period was not as difficult as they had imagined as it brought them even closer and helped them solidify their decision that they were both meant for each other. “We could accomplish so much more; with my passion for Africa and Clayton heading into his career in baseball, it felt like the Lord was up to something pretty cool with both of our passions,” Ellen told the Magazine.

They Got Engaged After 7 Years of Dating

As things would pan out, Kershaw and his girlfriend managed to keep in touch and after dating for seven years, the athlete popped the question in 2009, he was 21 years old at the time.

The engagement came as a surprise to Ellen, exactly how Clayton planned it. They went out on what seemed like an elaborate date that began with a trip to a Six Flags amusement park, Ellen at the time was on winter break from college.

After they left the park, the couple left in a limo for dinner before ending the day at Clayton’s townhouse where he popped the question.

On December 4, 2010, the couple exchanged vows in a Dodgers-themed wedding and have since remained solidly married making their marriage 10 years old and counting. The wedding ceremony was held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church after which guests were entertained to a fun reception at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston.

The Couple Are Parents To Three Kids

Clayton and Ellen Kershaw are proud parents to three children. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Cali Ann, on January 23, 2015, their daughter arrived a day before Clayton received his third Cy Young Award. In preparation for their expanding family, the couple purchased a bigger home near the Dodger Stadium. In 2017, Cali was featured in a Dodgers game when she threw out the first pitch to her father.

Their second child, a son named Charley Clayton joined the family in November 2016. Per Fox Sports, the child weighed eight-pound, two-ounce at birth. The couple expanded their family yet again in January 2020 with the bird of their third child a son they named Cooper Ellis Kershaw.

As baseball keeps Clayton Kershaw very busy, his wife Ellen holds the fort at the home, however, for four months in a year, the MLB star becomes a stay-home dad in order to help his wife out in the home. He told the Los Angeles Times that he uses that time to “catch up with the kiddos.”
