If you are familiar with the character Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 blockbuster The Sound of Music, then you must know the Canadian actor Christopher Plummer.

Apart from The Sound of Music, Plummer has starred in many other blockbuster movies like The Silent Partner, The Insider, where; he starred as Mike Wallace, A Beautiful Mind, In The Last Station; he was Leo Tolstoy. 

He has also portrayed several major historical figures, including Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington in 1970 blockbuster Waterloo, as Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King and as J. Paul Getty in All the Money in the World (2017).

Bio (Age)

Born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer on December 13, 1929, Plummer is the only child of Isabella Mary (former secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University) and John Orme Plummer, who sold stocks and securities.

Plummer’s great-grandfather is Sir John Abbott who was a Canadian prime minister, while his great-great-grandson is an Anglican clergyman and McGill president John Bethune.

His parents divorced the same year he was born, thus, Plummer was raised by his mother in Senneville, Quebec (a suburban village on the western tip of the Island of Montreal). He attended High School of Montreal and then McGill University.

Career

Plummer who first studied to be a concert pianist developed a love for the theatre at an early age. His acting days started while he was in High school, even in McGill, he also took up acting, after watching Laurence Olivier’s 1944 film Henry V.

His first notable role came when he played Darcy in the production of Pride and Prejudice. After high school, he trained with the Canadian Repertory Theatre in Ottawa, where he was featured in countless productions including The Infernal Machine, which also featured William Shatner and Cymbeline.

His first major Broadway debut came in 1953 when he starred in The Starcross Story, then came Home is the Hero. He also starred in The Dark is Light Enough, supporting legends Katharine Cornell and Tyrone Power.

Plummer had his greatest success on the big screen with his performance as the aloof widower Captain Georg Von Trapp in the 1965 movie The Sound of Music, which he starred alongside Julie Andrews. He appeared in so many other Hollywood blockbusters like Murder by Decree, The Silent Partner, The Insider, A Beautiful MindThe Last Station.

Some of his other movies include Daisy Clover, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, International Velvet, The Night of the Generals, Somewhere in Time, The Undiscovered Country, The New World, Eyewitness, Star Trek VI, Shadow Dancing, Dragnet, The Lake House among others.

He remains one of the most respected and honoured English actors performing in the English language.

Awards And Nominations

Plummer has been nominated for several awards and has won many of them. He is a recipient of two Emmy Awards out of six nominations, stretching from 1959 and 2005. He won one Genie Award out of five nominations from 1980 to 2004.

For his stage performances, Plummer can boast of two Tony Awards out of six nominations. His first The first was won in 1974 in Best Actor (Musical) category for his role in Cyrano and the second one was in 1997, as Best Actor (Play), for his role in Barrymore.

Surprisingly, Plummer didn’t receive an Academy Award nomination until 2010 when he earned a best-supporting actor nod for playing Russian literary great Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station. His first Oscar finally came in 2011 for his work in Beginners, where he played a Pensioner who came out as gay in his later years after the death of his wife.

In late 2017, he replaced Kevin Spacey for the J. Paul Getty role in All the Money in the World, after numerous accusations of sexual misconduct against Spacey. The movie earned him a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor.

In 1968, he received the Order of Canada, (Canada’s highest civilian honours at the time). In 2001, he received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Canada’s highest honour in the performing arts).

He has been honoured by the New York’s Juilliard School with the Doctor of Fine Arts and has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Toronto, Ryerson, McGill Western Ontario, Ottawa and most recently, the Guelph.

Christopher Plummer was also inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1986 and into Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto in 1998.

In 2016, he received the Canadian Screen Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Married, Wife, Daughter

Plummer has been married Thrice. His first marriage was to the actress Tammy Grimes, the couple were married for four years and had a daughter (Amanda Plummer, born 1957) together. According to him, he had no contact with his daughter during her early and teenage years but they now maintain a friendly relationship.

His second marriage was to Patricia Lewis from May 4, 1962, to 1967. He and his third wife, British dancer and actress Elaine Taylor, tied the knots on October 2, 1970, and are still together, they both live in Weston, Connecticut.
