Who Is Christina Tosi?

The popular American chef was born November 9th, 1982 in Ohio and she grew up in Springfield, Virginia. Her father is said to be an Agricultural Economist by profession while her mum is an Accountant. Christina Tosi is said to have spent a year at the University of Virginia studying Electrical Engineering but later moved to James Madison University from which she graduated. Upon graduation from school, she relocated to New York City and applied for a Pastry Art program in the French Culinary Institute.

Her Career

Christina Tosi was given her first job by David Chang, owner of the Momofuku Milk Bar, to prepare safety rules in compliance with instructions from the New York City Food Department. After writing a brilliant piece, Chang was pleased with her work and decided to offer her a job as manager of the pastry section in Momofuku Milk Bar. This was a huge opportunity for the chef as Momofuku restaurant group was a leading supplier of bakery products to diverse locations in the U.S.A. The main bakery was located in New York City which is also said to have about 5 other retailers under the group. Other major cities with retail outlets include Washington D.C, Las Vegas, Nevada and Toronto in Canada.

With a thriving career with the Momofuku group, Christina Tosi became known for transforming the pastry unit of the group with her innovative baking skills. In addition to her baking, she has been a judge the cooking shows Masterchef and Masterchef junior which is aired on Fox. Her other business venture is called Williams Sonoma store where she markets cookies.

The Chef is a proud winner of the James Beard 2012 Rising Star Chef Award after she participated in the 2014 Outstanding Pastry competition for which she emerged as the finalist

In October 2011, the celebrity chef was able to publish her first book titled ‘Momofuku Milk Bar’ and as the name of the book implies, the content was also mainly on dessert recipes that were being sold at Momofuku’s Milk Bar. Although the book received many good reviews, it was also criticized for being hard to use by home cooks as most of the procedures were too technical and some ingredients used are hard to obtain.

Not deterred by the negativity, Christina Tosi soon went ahead to publish a second book in April 2015 titled ‘Milk Bar Life’ which was a big improvement from her first and accommodated a lot of the public concern from the first. In this book, the chef shared simple recipes that anybody who knows how to use a cookbook can handle. ‘Milk Bar Life’ was also reviewed by many top-notch professionals who praised it for meeting the needs of home cooks as well as chefs who want to prepare savory dishes for close friends during non-working hours. Most of the ingredients in the book were easy to obtain, unlike her initial book which had items that were not common for home cooks.
