Chris Long’s Bio
Born on March 28, 1985, in Santa Monica, California, Chris is the eldest of three sons born to NFL defensive end, Howie Long and wife, Diane Addonizio. His full birth name is Christopher Howard Long. He was a whiz at sports during his high school days at St. Annes-Belfield School. He played a range of sports that included basketball, baseball, lacrosse, and football. Football was the one sport in which he excelled at, helping his team win the state UL school championship in 2003 whilst maintaining an unbeaten record along the way. In that year, Long made 91 tackles and 15 sacks. The following year, he played in the U.S Army All-American Bowl.
When the time for college came along, Long began pursuing a degree in Sociology at University of Virginia and played college football there for the school team from 2004 to 2007. His freshman year in 2004 was not all glitz and glamour on the pitch as a mononucleosis made him miss a handful of games.
By the next year, Long began to show his worth with an average of 3.8 tackles per game leading his team’s defensive linemen. He recorded 46 tackles and 2 sacks. Chris led his team for quarterback pressures and joint top in pass break-ups.
The year 2006 was even better, Long was voted captain, recording 57 tackles, 12 for a loss along with 4 sacks. He was also recognized for a couple of honors as well. The following year brought with it more honors and he was pitched for a host of awards. Long didn’t get to complete his degree, however, his number 91 jersey was retired at the University on November 24, 2007, in honor of his outstanding contributions. In like manner, his high school jersey was also retired in his honor at St. Annes-Belfield School.
Long was drafted in the 2008 NFL Draft as the second overall by the St. Louis Rams. While with the Rams, Long decided against being presumed as a starter but rather wanted to fight for his spot on the team. His ability to play in multiple positions also made a valuable team asset. After a long and rewarding stint both financially and on the pitch, Long left the Rams and signed a contract with the New England Patriots on May 18, 2016. His time with the Patriots brought about his first NFL championship. He left the Patriots and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 29, 2017, on a two-year contract. He went on to defeat his old team, the New England Patriots to win his second NFL championship.
Philanthropy is a big part of Chris’ life. In May 2015, he set up The Chris Long Foundation, tasked with raising funds to be used in building wells for communities in East Africa. In 2017, Long announced that he would donate his income for the 2017 NFL season to charity. Long has career earnings that stand at $89.36 million, a figure amassed over ten seasons.
