Biography

Cam Newton was born Cameron Jerrell Newton on May 11, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia to his parents, Jackie and Cecil Newton Sr., a one-time NFL hopeful who did not make the cut at both the Dallas Cowboys in 1983 and the Buffalo Bills in 1984. He is also the brother to Cecil Newton Jr. who most recently played for the Baltimore Ravens.

As a child, Newton was very athletic and played almost all the sports. He was most talented in football, basketball, and baseball but at around the age of 14, when he was about to begin his high school career, he opted to focus on football most likely to follow in the footsteps of his father and brother.

Newton attended Westlake High School in his hometown of Atlanta. He featured prominently for the school’s football team, the Westlake Lions, passing for 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 638 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior year. As a senior, he was getting nationwide attention with colleges from around the country offering him scholarships, but he committed to joining the University of Florida program.

At Florida, Newton played backup to eventual Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow. Despite doing well when called upon, Newton had a horrible time off the field. He was first sidelined with an ankle injury before he was arrested on felony charges of burglary, larceny, and obstruction of justice after he was accused of stealing a laptop from another student. That incident damaged his reputation and led to him getting suspended from the team. The charges were, however, dropped after Newton completed a court-sanctioned pre-trial diversion program.

The following year, in 2009, three days before his team won the National Championship, Newton announced he was transferring to Blinn College in Brenham Texas. At Blinn, Newton resurrected his career and gained back his reputation of being a highly-rated amateur quarterback. After one season, having led the team to the NJCAA National Football Championship, he transferred again to a Division 1 football playing school, Auburn University.

At Auburn, Newton continued to dominate the game and led his school to the 2010 BCS National Championship. He broke several long-standing records along the way and was crowned Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and the AP Player of the Year for his efforts. Add that to the highly coveted Heisman Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding player in college football in the United States.

Newton soon after forwent his senior college year to declare for the 2011 NFL Draft. On April 28, 2011, he was selected with the first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. His first season as a professional was one to remember as he was immediately named the Panthers’ starting quarterback. His performances during that year, which included being the first rookie to throw 400+ yards in his first career game and 422+ yards in passing, beating the legendary Peyton Manning, got him named the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Cam Newton has since moved from strength to strength in the NFL, becoming one of the league’s stars and one of its most dynamic players. In 2015, he was named the NFL MVP as he guided his team to Super Bowl 50 which ended in a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Newton is a devoted Christian and actively participates in motivational speaking. In the spring of 2015, he graduated with a degree in Sociology.
