Age and Early Life – Who Is Broken Matt Hardy?
Broken Matt Hardy, born as Matthew Moore Hardy on September 23, 1974, was born in Cameron, North Carolina. The American wrestler is the child to Gilbert Hardy and Ruby Moore. His mother, Ruby Moore, died when he was only twelve years of age as she lost her life to brain cancer in 1986.
Hardy has a sibling, a younger brother, Jeff Hardy, who is also a wrestler and together there were raised by their father, Gilbert. Even though he turned out to be a renowned wrestler with the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) – formerly World Wrestling Federation (WWF), Hardy’s first love in terms of sports was baseball. He started playing the sport as a child and continued playing in high school. He also played football with his two best positions being as a linebacker or as a defensive end.
Broken Matt Hardy attended Union Pines High School in North Carolina and had the head for the books. His brilliant performances in school earned him a nomination for the “Morehead Award”, an award which carries a scholarship package to any college or University in North Carolina. After graduating from high school, Broken Matt Hardy proceeded to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study Engineering. However, he did not complete his degree program as he had to come back home after his freshman year to take care of his younger brother, Jeff and his father who fell sick. He would later attend the Sandhills Community College, Pinehurst where he bagged an associate degree.
His Net Worth
Matt Hardy started his wrestling career when himself and his younger brother, Jeff Hardy, recorded themselves showcasing some wrestling skills under the name “High Voltage” and then sent the tape to the World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He (and his brother, Jeff Nero) worked with the WWF (as it was then called) in 1994 as a jobber when he was 19 and his brother 16.
In 1998, they were given a full-time contract which saw them adopt the name – The Hardy Boyz. They would go on to become 7-time WWE tag team champions with their high-flying stunts which see them jumping from very high heights to finish their opponents. They also recorded successes as solo fighters as Matt Hardy won the US and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) titles while Jeff won both the WWE and World Heavyweight titles.
Hardy left the WWE in 2010, following his brother, Jeff, who left the year before. He worked with Total Nonstop Action (TNA), International Wrestling Cartel (IWC), Allied Powers Wrestling Federation (APWF), Big Time Wrestling (BTW), and Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts (OMEGA) which he had created with Jeff. He then returned to WWE in 2017 and is still there presently.
It is not just by sheer luck that a wrestler stays relevant in the industry for 30 years and counting, but Broken Matt Hardy has managed to pull such feat. He did that through re-inventing himself from time to time with various gimmicks and also with the strategic use of the social media.
His first gimmick was the use of the persona “Version 1” in 2002 which earned him the accolade “Best Gimmick” by Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He debuted the “Broken” gimmick in 2016 which was widely received, drawing positive reviews and awards from wrestling enthusiasts. It also earned him a second “Best Gimmick” award.
As for his net worth, it is still unclear the actual sum it is presently. Hardy claimed in a tweet dated August 8, 2013, that he has a net worth of $20 million which his fans found to be exaggerated. Currently, his net worth is estimated to be between $1- $10 million as the exact figure is not known.
Why “Broken Matt Hardy”?
It is no more news that the Hardy brothers have returned to the WWE, but before they did they re-invented themselves. Now they go by the name “The Broken Hardys”. While wrestling against Jeff Hardy in the Impact Wrestling “I Quit” match in April 2016 after they left WWE, Matt Hardy was stretchered off the ring and by the time he reappeared the next month, he had a different – or rather, “Broken” personality. His appearance was altered as he had a left part of his front hair bleached blonde. His talking and dressing style equally changed.

Broken Matt Hardy is a married man, he has a wife and two children – all boys. A chronology of his dating life reveals his admiration for women in his profession. Hardy’s first known relationship was his affair with WWE Diva, Amy “Lita” Dumas. They started dating in 1999 after they met a couple of months earlier (in January) at an NWA Mid-Atlantic show.
Their relationship lasted for six years (1999-2005) before Hardy ended the affair after it was revealed that Lita was also seeing another wrestler who was also Hardy’s friend, Adam “Edge” Copeland. Moving on from Lita, Hardy would start dating another WWE star, Ashley Massaro in 2005. Their relationship lasted for just one year and they broke up in 2006. He also dated another WWE diva named Lori in 2006 before taking a sabbatical from relationships.
He met his wife, Rebecca Reyes a.k.a. Reby Sky and started dating her in February 2011. They got married two years later on October 5, 2013, and welcomed their first son, Maxel Hardy on June 23, 2015, while their second son Wolfgang Xander Hardy, came on June 8, 2017.
