Inside Look At Beyoncé’s Family With Husband Jay Z and their 3 Kids

Beyoncé has been married to Shawn Corey Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, since 2008 and they are still going strong. Together they have three children named Blue Ivy Carter, Sir Carter, Rumi Carter.

Beyonce and Jay Z are one of the most powerful couples in the entertainment industry and the reason for this is not far-fetched. The couple has been leading the music business for years and has remained super relevant in the competitive industry despite the immense number of talented figures that have emerged thereof.

While the former went from being the lead singer of one of the best-selling girl groups of all time to being one of the best-selling, solo recording artists in the world; her husband Jay Z is always counted among the most influential hip-hop artists in history, the first rapper to become a billionaire and one of the greatest artists of all time.

Given such a robust resume, it is only natural that Beyonce and Jay Z are incredibly popular with millions of fans across the globe who keep up with their family life as much as they follow their careers.

Like every other marriage, the Beyonce and Jay-Z union has faced marital troubles, including one that had many predicting a split. However, the power couple has been able to tame the demons troubling their marriage and are now parents to three kids.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Met In 2000 and Began Dating The Following Year

Beyonce and Jay-Z have always been prudent about sharing information about their relationship and this has made it quite tricky to determine how they met and the circumstances surrounding the beginning of their life together as a couple. For instance, the rapper disclosed in a 2007 interview that she met the Destiny’s Child lead singer “10 years ago”, meaning that their paths first crossed sometime in 1997. But based on Beyonce’s account, they met when she was 18, became friends, and eventually started dating when she turned 19.

Several reports seem to agree with Beyonce’s account of their meeting as it is generally held that they met in 2000 and began dating in 2001. As the story goes, they met on a plane while attending the 2000 MTV Spring Break festival in Cancun, Mexico; this was in March 2020. They reportedly sat next to each other and it has been said that Jay-Z rapped about the meeting in his song, “713”. After their first meeting, they didn’t get to talk for a while; when they got to talk, they became friends and the friendship lasted for about a year before it ushered in their relationship.

It was in 2001 that it became clear that a relationship was brewing between Beyonce and the famous hip-hop artist. From what we gathered, they had their first date at a Nobu restaurant. Jay Z brought one of his friends along to the date and he regards this as his “first foolish mistake”. That same year, the two made an appearance on Vanity Fair’s music issue alongside other popular singers. 2002 came and they dropped their first collaboration together – the singer featured on the rapper’s “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” and also appeared on the music video of the song.

At this point, people were super curious about what’s going on between the two but it became clear they were in a relationship when Beyonce dropped “Crazy in Love” in 2003, featuring Jay Z. After the hit song was released, they two were spotted together on several occasions which belittled Jay Z claim in an interview that they were just friends.

How Long Has Beyonce Been Married?

Beyonce and Jay Z made their first red carpet appearance in 2004 at the MTV Vidoe Music Awards. Their relationship would go on to face series of rumors and speculations in the years that followed. For instance, it was rumored in 2005 that the rapper was cheating on Beyonce with Rihanna who was starting her career. The following year, it was reported in some quarters that Bey was pregnant and planning a wedding.

Amid all the disruptive rumors and speculations, the couple continued to date and work together. The rapper was featured on two songs in the pop star’s 2006 album, “B’day”. That same year, Jay-Z rapped about his relationship with Beyonce in “Lost One”, the second single from his comeback album, “Kingdom Come”. An excerpt from the lyrics of the song read: “…I don’t think it’s meant to be, B… She loves her work more than she does me…”

If that line made anyone suspect that the two were headed for a breakup, they were in for a huge shock as the singers had an unexpected secret wedding in 2008. It was on the 4th of April 2008 that the couple got married in a secret ceremony that was held at Jay-Z’s penthouse in New York City. It was not known that the two were engaged neither was it known that they were married until they were seen picking up a marriage license.

With time, it was confirmed that they truly got married. As a substitute for wedding rings, they had the letters “IV” tattooed on their ring fingers. IV is the roman numeral equivalence of four (4) which stands for the date they got married and their birth dates – Beyonce and Jay Z were respectively born on the 4th of September 1981 and 4th of December 1969.

They Had a Secret Wedding Because They Needed Privacy

Over the years it became apparent that Queen Bey and Jay Z were an item, they generated a lot of buzzes that had people prying into their personal life. With that came several rumors and speculations that were quite disruptive to their career as much as they posed a threat to their relationship.

Given that, it is not difficult to see why the couple would settle for a private wedding. A few months after they got married, Beyonce opened up about the secret wedding, asserting that what she has with Jay is real and all that matters.

Adding that she isn’t a “traditional woman”, the “Put a Ring on It” singer divulged that she needed no engagement ring because it’s not important. For her, it’s silly that there is so much emphasis on that whereas it’s just a material requirement that isn’t a necessity.

Speaking of jewelry, it may be possible that at any point, Beyoncé actually has $10 million worth of jewelry on her. Beyonce’s stunning engagement ring is as beautiful as Beyonce and as rock-solid as her and Jay-Z’s 15+ year relationship (despite the rumours)

The Couple Collaborates Musically and Enjoys Doing So

As a married couple, the famous singer and her husband continue to work together and enjoy doing so. They have churned out multiple hits which have gone a long way in solidifying their status as the most powerful musical couple in the world.

Apart from featuring each other in their songs, Beyonce and Jay Z are also a musical duo known as The Carters. Sometime in June 2018, they released their first album titled “Everything Is Love” which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Together, they have been nominated for about 40 prestigious awards out of which they have won at least 10, including BET Hip Hop Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Brit Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and even a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Apart from working together, they have also been very supportive of each other’s solo career. It is said that Jay Z is the first person to listen to Beyonce’s songs before they get released to the public. Also, Jay Z believes his wife is the best performer in the world and has publicly expressed this.

While they continue to live and work together, their marriage hasn’t been free of troubles.

Their Marriage Has Survived Miscarriages and Infidelity

Marriages are challenging and often threatened by a range of problems, the case has not been different for Beyonce and Jay Z. Disregarding the problem of having people pry into their private lives in search of newsworthy stories, the couple has had issues that brought them sadness and almost led to the end of their marriage at some point.

To the best of our knowledge, the first challenge they faced in their marriage was when the pop star suffered multiple miscarriages sometime between 2010 and 2011. According to her, the miscarriages were the saddest thing she had had to endure. To cope with the misfortune, she had to turn to music. Thankfully, Beyonce now sees the experience as a life lesson. In one of her interviews, she related that having miscarriages made her realize she had to be a mother to herself first before she could be a mother to someone else.

It came to the knowledge of the public that the couple might be having issues in their marriage when Beyonce released her eponymous visual album. The album titled “Beyoncé” was unexpectedly released in December 2013 and lyrics in songs like “Jealous” and “Mine” raised questions about their marriage as it talked about broken promises and separation. It had been alleged earlier that year that Jay Z cheated on Beyonce with Rita Ora. The cheating rumor lingered on and it became clear in 2014 that Beyonce and Jay Z are having a difficult time in their marriage when a video of Bey’s sister physically attacking Jay Z in an elevator surfaced online.

While rumors of Jay-Z’s infidelity continued to trial their marriage for the rest of 2014 and into 2015, Beyonce’s 2016 album released on the 23rd of April confirmed that the marriage had been shaky all along. Titled “Lemonade”, the theme of the album revolved around “infidelity” but also hinted at reconciliation.

Beyonce and Jay Z Embraced Couples Therapy to Fix Their Marriage

Jay Z would later acknowledge that he truly cheated on Beyonce as he talked about it in his thirteenth studio album “4:44” wherein he apologized to his wife. Even though it has remained a mystery whom the rapper cheated with, he has openly discussed his infidelity.

In a bare-it-all interview with David Letterman, the hip hop artist disclosed that his marriage to Beyonce survived because his beautiful wife was able to look past what he did, understanding that he’s not the worst of what he did.

Based on what he said, they put in a lot of work to save their marriage, including going for therapy. Proclaiming that they love each other, the rapper added that they are in a better place as a married couple. “I’m proud of the father and the husband that I am today,” he said.

Their Oldest Child Is 12 Years Old

  • Full Name: Blue Ivy Carter
  • Date of Birth: January 7, 2012
  • Occupation: Singer
  • Schools Attended: The Center for Early Education

After suffering multiple miscarriages, Beyonce and Jay Z were set to welcome their first child together. It was only a rumor that the two were expecting a child together until Queen Bey confirmed it at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. She did so at the end of her performance in the event by unbuttoning her jacket and rubbing her stomach. It was a historic moment documented by The Guinness Book of World Records for pulling off the most tweets per second in a single event.

Eventually, Blue was born on the 7th of January 2012 and she was welcomed as the world’s most famous baby at Lenox Hill Hospital located in Manhattan, New York. Blue’s birth was such a big deal because she was regarded as a cultural icon. In line with that, her parents didn’t take any chances, they immediately trademarked Bule’s name. There is no doubt that Blue wouldn’t be as popular as she is if her parents aren’t who they are. Still, it is remarkable what she has been able to attain in the entertainment industry as a child. At just 2 days old, Blue Ivy Carter became the youngest person ever to appear on the Billboard chart, thanks to her father. Jay Z featured her crying in his single, “Glory” which was released two days after she was birthed.

In the years that followed, she has featured in no fewer than ten of her parents’ songs. Most notably, she sang on the “Brown Skin Girl” track of the 2019 soundtrack album, “The Lion King: The Gift. The song won Blue the BET Her Award in 2020, making her the youngest winner of a BET Award. In all, she has been nominated for at least five prestigious awards, including a Grammy, out of which she has won three.

Surprisingly, Beyonce and Jay Z haven’t been extremely protective of Blue as one may have imagined they would, given the way they were secretive about their relationship. Blue Ivy Carter has made several public appearances with her parents. Notably, she co-presented the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to her mother alongside her father at the MTV Video Music Awards in August 2014. She has continued to attend industry and award events with her parents. She stole the show at the 2016 MTV Video Music Award because of her expensive clothing with featured $565 Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers and a Mischka Aoki gown estimated to be worth almost $11,000.

Blue hasn’t forsaken education in pursuit of a career in the entertainment industry. She attended the Center for Early Education, a private primary school located in West Hollywood, California.

The Couple Announced They Were Expecting Twins and Set the Internet Ablaze In February 2017

It was on the 1st of February that Beyonce took to Instagram to make the announcement. “…We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two…,” she wrote in a picture that showed her bulging stomach. Almost as soon as she shared the picture, it became the most-liked photo on the platform. It attained over 6.3 million likes within eight hours, gaining the attention of the Guinness World Record which documented that it had broken the world record for Most Liked Image on Instagram held by Selena Gomez.

Unlike their older sister Blue Ivy Carter who was born in Manhattan, New York, the twins were born in California, at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on June 13, 2017. As it was when she announced she was pregnant with twins, the singer broke the internet when she shared the first picture of her twins named Sir and Rumi Carter on the 14th of July 2017. The picture attained 7.8 million likes within 12 hours after it was shared.

Rumi Carter

  • Date of Birth: June 13, 2017
  • Age: 6
  • Occupation: Undetermined

She is the oldest of the twins and was reportedly named after the 13th-century Islamic scholar and poet, Jalaluddin Rumi. As it is with her older sister Blue Ivy Carter, her parents reportedly trademarked her name. As she is still a kid with a lot of growing up to do, more will be learned about Rumi in years to come. Unlike Blue, Beyonce and Jay Z have been very protective of Rumi and her twin brother but thanks to her grandmom Tina Knowles, we know she’s that kind of lass that gives the vibe of someone who would rule the world.

Time would tell if Rumi would pursue a career as an entertainer or settle for a different profession. Whatever she would decide to do, there is no doubt she would enjoy the unflinching support of her parents. Nonetheless, there are signs she would follow in her mother’s footsteps. She briefly featured on the music video of “Brown Skin Girl” alongside her mother and sister.

Sir Carter

  • Date of Birth: June 13, 2017
  • Age: 6
  • Occupation: Undetermined

He is the only son of Beyonce and Jay Z, as well as the last child of the family as he is the youngest twin. According to his grandmom who related that Sir’s twin sister would rule the world, Sir is laid back and chills like his father. It has also been said that his name was inspired by the way he carries himself with an aura of royalty. Of course, his name was also trademarked like those of his older sisters.

In the fullness of time, more will be learned about Sir Carter and hopefully, he would follow the footprints of his parents. At the moment, he has a lot of growing up to do and doesn’t concern himself with thoughts about what the future holds for him.

Beyonce and Jay Z have been very protective of Sir and his sister. In fact, they refrained from sharing pictures of the twins for about a year after they were born. The singer eventually did so on her website Beyonce.com when they were 13-months old.

Here’s Why Beyonce and Her Husband Have Been Very Protective of Their Twins

Given how the couple was very open about the birth of their first child, it is pretty difficult to understand the reason behind the secrecy surrounding the birth of the twins. Unlike Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir Carter are a rare sight to behold. While the power couple has not said anything about the decision to shield Rumi and Carter from the public, one might as well conclude it has something to do with what they learned from exposing Blue to the public.

Even though a lot of people were delighted to keep up with Blue as she makes public appearances, she received negative scrutiny in some quarters. An instance was in 2012 when Jaclyn Friedman wrote a piece she titled “Unsolicited Advice For Blue Ivy”. The writeup was bashed for being subtly racist that the feminist writer was forced to tender a public apology and donate what she was paid for the piece to SisterSong, an activist organization known for campaigning for justice for women of color.

Another instance was in January 2020 when Megan The Stallion shared pictures of her, Beyonce, and Blue on social media sites. Reacting to the pictures, a Vanity Fair writer identified as K. Austin Collins and a Harper’s Bazaar editor named Violet Lucca made fun of Ivy’s looks. Collins tweeted that he feels sorry for Ivy because she seems to have inherited her father’s face genes. Violet responded to that, stating that the child would get plastic surgery when she turns 16. “I can’t allow myself to feel too sorry for the incredibly rich,” she tweeted.

As expected, Collins and Violet were bashed for their insensitive remarks about a child. They deleted the tweets and apologized for the foolishness.

Beyonce Has Been Having a Hard Time Balancing Her Career and Motherhood

Being a mother is arguably one of the most tasking things to do and it can only be intensely exhausting if you are a mother of three with a career as illustrious as Beyonce’s to maintain. The pop star has admitted that it has been a difficult journey for her. Apart from caring for her kids, she has had to worry about her career and maintaining a pleasing body.

She had an emergency C-section to have her twins as her health and theirs were in danger. Thanks to the pregnancies and the surgery, her body is no longer what it use to be but the singer says she has come to terms with her “little mommy pouch” and the fact that her arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller.

However, balancing work and her family life remains the most stressful thing for her. She once related that her daily activities range from dropping Blue off at school to taking the twins to their activities, being at home on time for dinner, and occasionally making time for date nights with Jay Z while running her management and entertainment company.
