Bas Rutten’s Bio
Though popularly known within and outside the ring as Bas Rutten, the retired wrestler was born Sebastiaan Rutten on the 24th day of February 1965, in Tilburg, Netherlands. In his early age, Bas developed severe asthma and terrible eczema that made him skinny and compelled him to wear turtlenecks, long sleeves, and gloves. He was constantly bullied as a child until he started training himself in boxing and martial arts having developed a strong interest in the sport at the age of 12 after watching the 1973 film Enter The Dragon with his brother in a movie theatre while his family was on vacation to France.
Initially, his parents refused to allow him to practice martial arts but they changed their mind after two years but only allowed him to practice taekwondo. Bas was fourteen at the time. A few months after practicing, he got into a street fight with a rival who has been bullying people. In the course of the fight, now confident Rutten broke his nose and knocked him out with a punch. This resulted in the police showing up in his home and he was subsequently barred from further practicing martial arts.
However, Bas got back to taekwondo training after moving out of his parents’ house at 21, earning a 2nd-degree black belt and subsequently a 2nd-degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate.
Rutten got inducted into the UFC Hall Of Fame in July 2015 for gaining a significant 70.6% strike accuracy (the highest FightMetric has ever penned down), recording 13 knockdowns without getting dropped himself, sweeping his rivals a record 46 times, and attempting a record 53 submissions, as a pro fighter.
